What's the deal with the P-39? Everytime I take her up in an online game I find that 1 hit from either a flak burst that was a little too close, or one little MG bullet that hit me I begin to smoke.

Is it smoke? I'm not sure exactly what it is I thought it might be fuel but my fuel doesn't seem to go down, it doesn't seem to affect the plane's performance however, it makes my presence visible to people miles around.

Do people find this happens too often too? Or is it just because the engine is located behind the cockpit and is more likely to get hit, or it's the P-39's answer to the Bf 109's oily windscreen, which also occurs a hell of a lot?

on the other hand, P-39 - even smoking - can fly almost forever http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hopefully they will fix this bug ...
So there would be no more concerns about beeing visible, cause you would go down fast enough http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

the DM of the p-39 has been a problem forever, as for the Lagg3...

take a IAR 80
alone, agaisnt 12 rookie P-39's

you can make em all go down on fire without being hit and still have MG's left by the end of the fight

12 kills with an underarmed plane like the IAR 80?

hardly

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

The P-39s engine is not especially weaker than any other merlin/alison/db601/klimov engine in the game. Unfortunately, it rides in back, which means that unlike most aircraft you can be shot in the engine from your 6 o'clock very easily. There may be something funny with the way it deals with fragment damage, same as the P-63, but in terms of rifle cals as from the IAR80, they have the same effect on other engines when they're hit. It's just easier to do it when you have a direct shot on the engine.

Tests showing AP penetration from behind on other inlines show them to be similarly weak. Harder to set up perfectly angled shots to do it with though.

Didn't the Russians strip some armor of the plane in order to make it more competitive?
The performance shows that, and I think the damage model should too.
I think i read somewhere (some German WW2 Ace's memory) that the Russian Cobras would easily catch fire. That was all he remembered. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Hi,

I dunno about one hit; I seem to have to hit them with about 5-6 20mm hits from the 190 to get them smoking and then they, as already said, seem to fly forever (like the P63).

Ta,
Norris

'Bugs? What bugs?'
'AAA steals online kills, crash landing if good landing but out of fuel, muzzle flashes, kill given for planes that have landed OK, AI steals offline kills, gauges not working, Spitfire never overheats, FW190 view, P63 damage model, weird collision modelling...'
'Yeah, but look on the bright side - at least the 0.50s are fixed!'
