View Full Version : STILL in love with La-5

Noob plane, whatever, loved it in Il*2, love it in FB, any model La-5. Once I got low speed handling and high speed stalls mastered a little, I can throw it around and have fun. On the LW side, I still prefer the Bf109F-2. I'll have to pick up my LW campaign again and remember how to fly it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif But now that I'm comfy with the plain jane La-5 again, I feel like I can just skip out of anyone's way, wingover and chase 'em down. I can have a vertcal fight or a turn fight with short intervals of combat flaps. Sometimes I try to bnz with it and when I screw THAT up, I can still either escape most of the time or re-gain the offensive. I think it's really more important to choose a plane you like and are comfortable with than some 'uber' crate anyhow. I mean, I like the '109F2, but at slow speed I can't hit the broad side of a barn. I can fly the La-5 pretty well, point it at targets pretty good, and can catch a slow speed low altitude stall in it. I'm not sure anyone else shares my liking for the plain 'ol La-5, but after trying all the wrong ways to fly it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, now that I've found a right technique or two (about time) it's like an old friend. The La-5f and -5fn don't have the same character to me, although I really like to fly them too, but the La-5 is my mount of choice off-line at present. I overheat the later ones too quickly. I need more practice in them I guess! Don't really like the La-7 although it's supposed to be so good. I need a good internet connection and I'll play online SOMEday. Maybe after my reveiw at work I can afford high speed internet.

Anyway, in an single player campaign, what planes circa '42 do you all fly, for VVS and for LW? Just curious. I really really want to like the Yaks more, but I am not a good Yak driver yet! Same with the FW190. Can't do anything but kill myself in it so far, so it's the Bf 109 for me if I want to fly at all for the LW so far.

What era chuck? 42 or 43? If it is 1942 I would fly the 109G-2.Just as qual in the vert.Tighter turning.A pretty good punch.

If it 43 then the G6 another fly and climb,I would to chanllenge you after you get your connection. Are you up to it?

I won't get into the "uber" argument, but the La series is one of the easiest AC to achieve kills with. my record for online kills in one sortie is 4. I got this one night w/ the La-5FN even though I rarely fly that or any other VVS bird.

My usual mount, the 109, requires much more skill to fly and fight, even in situations where the 109 has an advantage over it's opponent.

BTW, in '42 the G2 rules the skies

I've been flying a Finnish campaign with the G-2, over the frozen gulf.

I actually started a Russian TB-3 campaign but never made it more than 20km from base before getting shot down http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

La5s vs A6Ms..... a nice fight.... set AI to at least veteran... Of course the whole thing is different online. It amazes me how different it is between AI & human pilots but the AI in FB is top notch IMO. I can still be flying for hours with the AI and having fun.

I really like the La-5, but i've had to return to base one too many times in it without half of my controls working. Therefore I stopped flying it.

I get shot at a lot unfortunatly, reguardless of the plane I fly.

Were the elevator controls in that thing made from old bailing twine?

(actually, now that I think of it the throttle control used to always fail).

Well, you try not to get shot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'll be flying against anyone who wants to online, frag, no need to set an appointment, lol http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

La-5, La-5f, or La-5fn?
I don't care how 'sexy' anyone thinks an La-5 is or isn't based on how easy it is to fly, online or off. I like the La-5 and that's that. If I was a huge FW190 fan I'd be flying that, regardless if it was hard or easy to fly. I already have a job, play shouldn't be work, too. I don't play FB to prove how great I am, I play to have fun.

Im currently practicing with the La 5 on the original il2. I fell in love with the tight turns, speed, size, and armnament of the airplane.
On a side note, doesnt it seem that goodnight is constantly bragging about his personal achievments in this sim. I cant stand it. He constantly drops his unneeded negativity on noobs and experienced pilots. Just my 2 cents. But surely Chuck, you want a challenge. I always fly the 109 and now the 190, and its hard, and I always get shot down on-line - but its the challenge thats rewarding.

Well yes, that's why I'm trying to learn to fly the 190.

Here y'go Chuck, in case you missed it:

FW 190 interview (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=51110714)

Was done back in July, I just bumped it recently. Seems few people care about the interview, though I know that it's helpful. I'm about to make it available in PDF form.

My online record for kills is around 14 - in the 190a9 pre patch - I got 8 first time up in the 262 (these are all cockpit on). Now things have changes a bit - the 262 is still a monster but the dora is the dream of the 190 crop - personally I like that and the a5 - and the p39. I don't really think there are any 'noob planes' per se. Some are easier than others, but once you get a decent level of skill I think they are all challenging.

Here's a man I respect, he's found what he likes and is sticking to it, no matter how much people ridicule him. I'll be flying the P-38 and P-40B to my heart's content when the finally make it in game. Those are my two fav's, but for now, I'm sticking with the P-40E!

This is a perfect example of someone who likes and is actually good at the La-5. Many we'll see who pick up the plane as their first (it was my first) and then move on and learn something else and stay with that (since it suits their style and thats what they are good at) but there are going to be some "ace" pilots in all types of aircraft...regardless of aircraft performance.

A little tip with your La series. Lower your throttle and pitch settings in the turns. Than drop combat flap. If you do it right you can own the fight right down to 200 Kph sustained turns. That's ten below a 109's stall. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Only the P-11c or I-153 might be able to hang with you.

When I fly for the VVS off-line I like the I-16. I fly Brewster for the Finns. But then, I like the mediocre planes. For the Luft, I usually fly 109f and e.
