View Full Version : New SimHQ review of Forgotten Battles

With the hubbub of the patch being released, it seems to have been overlooked: Vince Putze has written a brand-spanking new, five-page article about Forgotten Battles.

http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_071a.html

I haven't read through the whole article yet, but the tone and conclusions seem positive. I'll have more time to read it later, but I wanted to make us aware of it. Be sure to send a note to SimHQ to let them know what you think of it, too. He only seems to mention the patch twice, and not even in connection with the flight or damage models. It speaks a lot that the game got positive reviews with the author running only a 1.2GHz system (although he also used a Ti4400).

Cheers,
Mike

Very accurate and fair. A good read and I think the writer would be pleased w/ the patch as it addresses many of the things he talked about. (especially the effectiveness of the .50 cals, If you haven't noticed how good Ma Duce is by firing a few, then you will learn as a few are fired @ you)

Wow even the writer at SIM HQ says the US planes and the MaDuce are undermodelled and the I16 is Uber.. Does that qualify as a whine? Or a professional opinion.

"The only derogatory comments I have are the persistency of bullet smoke trails and the 'Nuclear' muzzle flashes. I've done a whole lot of shooting, both military and civilian, and I've never seen any smoke trail continuously follow the bullet all the way to the target. This is unrealistic even on tracers. The muzzle flashes are also way too bright. Their intensity is almost appropriate for nighttime, but in a daytime environment they should be much more subdued. The real-life 30 MM cannon on the USAF A-10 is not even as bright as a Light MGs in FB!"

Yeah, nuff said.

Here are some comments I have after reading the article. It is an article of appropriate length to cover the game. He does not (and cannot reasonably) cover the game comprehensively, but he touches on most of the important aspects. He takes the stance of reviewing it as a hard-core sim but balances his comments and criticisms by comparing it to the rest of what's available (without explicitly naming names). The conclusions are positive and I think fair. He doesn't get into nitty-gritty criticism like we do, which is good because that kind of criticism is much more appropriate to forums than reviews.

http://www.simhq.com/_air/images/air_071a_17t.jpg

My major criticism of the review is that it is somewhat ill-timed. It was published on the day of the release of the patch, and yet the author speaks of many issues that were to be addressed by the patch. He specifically wonders in the conclusion about why there is no theater change to appeal to westerners, which he supposes is the target audience. This shows a lack of understanding of community anticipation of the patch as well as a lack of research since the expansion to other theaters has been announced. (Unfortunately screenshots only seem to be available on non-English sites.) Although this is probably not crucial, it doesn't give readers a good understanding of the extremely relevant changes, including changes he directly addresses in his criticism.

All in all I find it a good review, and the professional SimHQ layout makes it an easy- and fun-to-read article as well. I plan to link it from my site.

Cheers,
Mike

Agreed. It was badly timed - I wonder why they did not hold off for a week and see what benefits the patch had to offer.

Nonetheless, it is a balanced and well-considered review well worth reading.

I'm not too sure he was aware of the imminent patch release.

I wrote to Beer Camel (the author) to share my comments and as it turns out he is not only not in the dark, but he has some viable reasons for reviewing the way he did. Here are the main points he made in his reply:

1) He was aware of the patch. They waited on the announced August 4 week in order to add comments on its content. When delayed, they went ahead, and the article was released on the same day by coincidence.

2) SimHQ has a policy to review games in their pre-patch release form. In most patch cases there are not enough changes to justify a new review. I find this to be a fairly good idea, but I suspect FB may get a new review down the road.

3) He was aware of the plan to expand FB into other theaters. He didn't include it because it is still in the planning stage, and it is a review not a preview. They (SimHQ) have learned to be skeptical of anybody's plans" until they see it ready.

4) He had the patch installed before seeing his own article on SimHQ. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-very-happy.gif He's also impressed by the dedication at 1C:Maddox.

I guess this shows my inexperience in the world of flight sims. I think these are all extremely valid points and I'm glad I sent feedback so I could learn something in return, and the response was quite thorough and fast. My estimation of the folks over at SimHQ just went up a notch.
