View Full Version : Again, a curiosity about the Hurricane...

...I was flying my 22nd mission, russian campaign, Leningrad in a Hurricane IIc...My squad had to protect a Pe2 in reconnaissance mission over an enemy airbase...
We flew to the target, and engaged 6 Moranes...I thought it was easy...But suddenly, I started turning with one bandit when my plane went into a flat stall...Until now, I always could recover from almost every stall in any plane in FB, but this time was different...I never experienced a flat stall, and I never thought I could do it in a Hurricane! But I did, and it was impossible to recover, no matter what I tried...full opposite rudder, full stick, power down...to no avail...I crashed in the sea from 2500m!!!!
I´m sorry I didn´t save the track, as it was something to be seen indeed!

In a flat spin I usually try and max the power (more air over the rudder) and "stamp" on opposite rudder with the elevators fully forward. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

It may help.

Yes, it was impossible to recover from that flat spin...I thought I could do it the usual way, but I didn´t...next time it happens, I´ll bail out!

Yep flat spin is bail time.

Don't waste precious seconds trying to recover (unless your going external to spectate!).

Happened to me in a 190 Dora early on in my 'career'.

Like the man said earlier:

I know, but I thought that at 3000m + I had plenty of time to try to recover..once I realized it was an impossible task, it was just too late to bail out...Result: one more VVS KIA.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

LOL.

Thankfully, unlike our RL counterparts, we get to learn from our mistakes!

That way we get to be statistics AND live (why am I now thinking of cake /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

I think that is true of most aeroplanes.

My Dad part-owns a Yak 52 (Although he has yet to take me up in it -_- ) and he has to wear a parachute when going up - if they havn't recovered from a flat spin before 2000ft, bail out.

i can never really get out of flat spin unless by luck !

what i find usually works with all other is full opposite rudder and then as last resort turn off engine - usually seems to work, oddly enough (don't go telling everyone though ! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

It was not an easy task, I must admit, but it stalled after a rather long and tight descending turn, almost blacking out...I nver thought the Hurri could stall that way in FB.

I bailed from a hurri in a flat spin the other day: after a while drifting in my chute the plane caught up with me and killed me. D'oh!

You need to catch a spin before it turns into a flat spin. Your going to get alot of practice after the patch.

I hate that when that happens.

Happened to me a while ago in a Polykarpov I-153 (Yes, I'm an expert in stalling /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif ) A flat spin UPSIDE DOWN! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif a remarkable view
I bailed out and a while after the plane came towards my head and blew up(!!!) f#%&ing up my chute

Never had a flat spin in FB, but in IL one could recover from it by using this unorthodox method:
1) full ailerons to left or right
2) gear out
3) full flaps down

Needed some kilometers in 109.. but worked, mostly. Now, inverted flatspins were a bit more tricky ;-)

Yeah, what Werre said. Drop everything, gear, flaps and ailerons would probably be smart too. Doesn't always work but it does enough to give it a shot. Beats the alternative.
