I've a

Tbird 1.5 (oc)
GF4 Ti4200 (301/513)
1 Gig of PC2100
SB Live Value
110 gigs total storage
etc etc etc

FB-wise it runs fine at med/high detail settings. Thinking of upgrading in the summer though, need more speed and Dx9 for work.

About the same I would say.

CPU: P4 2,6
RAM: 512MB
Video: Radeon9600TX
Audio: onboard AC'97 (playing with headphones anyway)
PSU: 400W
HD: 160GB
Drives: DVD RW, DVD ROM, assortment of Flash, MM and other cards
Monitor: 17''TFT

No perfect settings in FB or LOMAC, but it looks good enough and runs smoothly with 1024 resolution. I'm planning to buy a second comp in the summer, and probably will upgrade RAM and Videocard on this one along with it.

yeah, i'm a little behind myself but still get overall good performance...I'll probably upgrade toward the end of the year but this is all i've got for now http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'm running an AMD 2000+, Radeon 9200 128mb, 640mb PC133 and an SB PCI128 on windows 98SE. I will likely do a bunch of upgrades this summer when I have enough time for a job (I'm a college student). I'm thinking of upgrading my mobo, replacing the PC133 with 1GB of DDR of some sort (depends on price and compatability), and upgrading my GPU to a Radeon 9600 unless the next generation of ATI's is released by the time I have enough money. My CPU is perfectly good and capable of handling anything currently out or coming out in the next year so I don't plan to upgrade that anytime soon. My soundcard while truely ancient is still superior to onboard sound so that will likely stay as well.

BTW, your system isn't terribly out of date. Right now we are in a period where not much new stuff is being released. But of course that will change shortly as the next generation of gear is nearing completion.

Wow, pretty close!! i just bought a powercolors 9800 pro with the 2nm chips though... (very overclockable ! )

based on the video card alone, i had to opt for better. Update that card, and you'll be stylin!! I'm running at perfect with water-3 offline with great performance. Online i tone it down to excellent.

You have solid machine to run AEP Fiend. Might not pull off BOB, but pretty good for AEP.

Far as I'm concerned, you don't even need to plan to upgrade in two years, provided something doesn't change in the gaming world that would make use of the surplus power you already have.

I'd get rid of the sound card, and use what's on your mobo: onboard sound today is just as good as what you can get out of a box, and it's one less system component to screw things up.

Maj_Death
04-16-2004, 01:16 PM
No, onboard sound has always sucked and still does. I have given it a try every time I get a new mobo (I don't think you can get a mobo without it) and every single time a seperate soundcard has proven to be vastly superior in both sound quality and speed. But if you are listening through some super cheap 1/2cm built into the side of your moniter speakers then yeah, it probebly doesn't have any effect.

Your system should hold pretty well for FB and the upcoming PF. But I really think we all need to be up to date when BoB comes and the add-ons thereafter if any. I personally am waiting for the PCI-express with a Radeon 420 along with a AMD 64 later this year as my jump forward until then my machine can handle anything thrown at it.

When it comes to upgrades, there is so much incentive to wait.

Sure, I could drop $200 bucks on a 9800. But why settle for % increases, when you can have a whole new rig? New guts for a computer is chump change when I consider what I paid for the setup initially.

Another issue is hardware price and quality changes. Last weeks $99 PC2700 has become todays $99 PC3200 (and that was last week, LOL) . So I'm also concerned about timing. I don't want to pay a premium for state-of-the-art,but I want enough quality to insure longevity.

And this just seems like a bad time to upgrade. Better to wait, I reason, because I'll definitely want a machine that can handle BoB @ least as well as I enjoy FB today. And the best way to insure that will be to time the upgrade w/ the release of that game. Till then, I think my current setup will be just fine.

Georgeo if I were you I would maybe bump up that 2200 a notch for a performance boost (get an extra fan or two) and just start to save for your next rig. I plan no upgrades..other than TIR.. unless something dies of course.. till at least 2006. Your rig runs FB decently right? Do you do other stuff? More demanding stuff? If not ot only limited i would keep my current rig anf look to the future... by then that blazing NV6800 will be about $200 if you can find one. I would wait. I had a XP 1600 on 266DDR.... the only reason I upgraded was that my wife wanted a comuter and she threatened to go buy one.... so i took my old setup CPU,MOBO,RAM & PS and put it in a new case for her.. bought her a flatscreen monitor, some speakers and a desk, and Im her hero. I eventually put a Ti 4200 in there.. I kept my 9500 Pro in my rig..till I found the 9800Pro on sale for $199.. which I just couldnt pass up and Im glad I didnt. If not for that I would still be with my 1600... I may have bought a faster CPU (I was actually considering a +2400 around Thanksgiving) but thats it.

The Nvidia soundstorm is quite good actually.... I havent tried to use my Audigy card in here because the ST works so well.. no drop in performance at all. It has a seperate APU on the MOBO.

Just do a minor upgrade like I did.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 3000 + (333 MHz FSB)upgraded from Athlon XP 2100 + (Gave me 20 - 30 FPS increase)Make sure your MOBO supports it, it will most probably need a BIOS update if it does.

The rest:
Gigabyte GA7VAX 333MHz KT400 8x AGP
1 GB PC 2700 DDR DRAM
Audigy Player
7200 RPM IBM 40 GB HD
5400 RPM 20 GB HD
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro upgraded from Radeon 9500 Pro

TrackIR 2
CH Throttle USB
CH Pro Pedals USB
MS FFB 2

Mitsubishi 19" Diamond Pro 930 SB .24 mm dot pitch

I noticed a lot of you have huge hard disks. I download a hell of a lot of music and ahem cough films and I find I have enough space because I burn a lot. My flatmate has an 80GB and all she does is surf the web and e-mail http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif the only bit taken up is 1.5 GB for XP what a waste.
