i hope they make it in the game, but how is it different than setting your bomb delay to 3+ ?

besides it looking cool

Parafrags were anti-personell bombs designed to be dropped at very low level, the parachute would keep the bomb in the air long enough for the bomber to escape. When the bombs touched the ground, they would exploded before burrying themselves like conventional bombs. This meant the destructive force was focused above ground and the bomb sent schrapnel in all directions. Highly effective against unarmored targets and humans. I guess you could call them the precursor to today's cluster bomb.

quote:
One of Kenney's most ingenious devices was the parafrag, a small fragmentation bomb with a parachute attached to slow its descent so that bombers could fly in at treetop height, drop their bombs and still have time to escape the explosions. By bombing Japanese airstrips with parafrags, the Fifth could demolish scores of enemy aircraft at a clip. By late 1944, the Fifth had blown up more than 1,000 enemy planes.

From this site - http://motlc.wiesenthal.com/text/x21/xr2180.html

stansdds is spot on. It's not just getting away, it's frags spread at ground level.

An interesting FMB note from the picture as well. When Il-2/FB had the ability to park AI planes by setting waypoints to 0/0, I used to mix "real" bombers (only a few plane types could be parked) among the static bombers. The cool thing was when you shot the statics they just break and look burned up, but it was far harder to kill the parked AI planes, frequently multiple passes. They also burned and made smoke. You could chose their loadout as well, empty and they wouldn't shoot their guns, or bomb them up if parked on the taxiway in line to TO. I hope we can do that in PF's FMB, will look very neat with parafrags going off.
