View Full Version : Red & Blue Books In Trailer

How does this sound. The books Atrus destroyed on Myst Island were only the "linking" books to the two prison ages. Atrus kept the actual "age" books in that vault we see in the trailer. The girl( hopefully not Yeesha because I will have a hard time getting any enthusiasm for rescueing her ) finds them and not knowing the history writes some new "linking" books to those ages freeing Sirru and Achenar.

? Can that be right? I thought a damaged book could only be made by there being an "error" made to a description book. If I remember right, it talked about it in Riven and Atrus had said he had found out about it by mistake or something. Is it possible to make a linking book to a damaged description book?

-_- I don't like the idea at all that the brothers will be making a "return". I seriously hope that's not the case. :P Can't Ubi come up with something more creative. That's like a bad soap opera. "And after fighting Saavedro and finally getting him home and perhaps fixing some of the things they did wrong, we find out that the brothers never actually died and have now come back to wreak further havoc"
... I might be a novelist, not a game writer, however, I'm sure even I could do a lot better than that.

*Sigh* But whatever, if it happens that way I'll continue muttering under my breathe that Ubi game writers suck while still enjoying Myst 4 because it is a Myst game.

Well you wouldn't have to worry about a damaged descriptive book because they would not have been damaged, just the linking books. That is a good idea. I have a feeling that the girl is Yeesha though, and we HAVE to save her or their would be no URU!!! I'm not sure about Yeesha writing linking books to the prison ages though. She could find the red and blue descriptive books and link to them and have a return linking book with her...thus freeing them...but the only thing I'm not sure about is how or why she would link to both of them. Unless she linked to one and then got kidnapped and then he releases the other brother...Oh and by the way...Atrus doesn't kill the brothers, he just destroys the linking books to the ages that they were trapped on.

I think that's Yeesha in the trailer, for what it's worth. I also think that the brothers try to corrupt her somehow and we're supposed to rescue her, maybe? Or maybe she helps them change their ways? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

^_^ Then you've got me wrong. I'm a true blue Myst fan and I'm probably going to buy Myst 4 the day of its release just like I did with Myst 3 (collector's edition even) even if they tell me the game sucks. However, I think it's a little on the "unoriginal" side. It is fun to talk about it and it will be interesting to see how Ubi pulls off their return and I'm as hyped as anyone around here about it (I joined this community because of the game afterall). But... could they have done better? Hell yes!!

Meh, call me a stick in the mud if you want, but I'm not the type to keep shut about her opinions. ^_^ And I stick by them even if everyone else is against me.

Maxine, I think you're just severely outnumbered by the people who have been wanting to see more of the brothers since we finished with Myst. They're really more dynamic characters than Atrus, Gehn, or even Saavedro because of the way that they changed over time (while Saavy was just angry, Gehn was quite insane, and Atrus has been his stoic Greek-hero-self since he was born http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), going from well-behaved children to power-hungry and rather sadistic adults.

I'll say this, though: It's been pretty well established by Cyan that the brothers are lost to Atrus (not dead, just lost), so how the Revelation team brings them back into the story will have a HUGE bearing on how well the story plays out (and again, I'm also curious as to how they're going to deal with the "Trap Books don't exist" contradiction between the game world and the "real" history, as this will undoubtedly have an effect on the story's presentation). That's really the only apprehension I still have about the game, the rest of them having been allayed with the material I've seen so far.

To be honest, I was upset when Exile promised to give us a larger glimpse into Sirrus and Achenar's past, and really failed to pull it off. I'm much more jazzed about this game because there's really no way that the Revelation team can duck the S&A angle after the teaser trailer's closing animation, and I've been itching to see more of the brothers http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

::shrugs:: I'm use to my views being outnumbered. However, it still sounds like the storyline has become very stagnant and now it's standing in one place. It's just going to continue going back over and over again with the brothers and Atrus and everyone. I would have perfered something happening with Releeshaun. Hrrrrm...

D'ni citizens are content with new life... except one. Who tries to kidnap Yeesha to get Atrus to create a new world to his liking or to edit the world or whatever. And we have to go and save Yeesha.

Or maybe Yeesha find the book of old D'ni and when she goes there she finds that library refered to in the Book of Atrus and picks up a book and touches it... but now she's lost... we have to find her, and in doing so discover some lost secret of the D'ni.

Meh, and I'm not even a game writer and those aren't even well-thought out ideas but if someone were to start on them and work on them really well the storyline could continue way past the point it is now rather than keep going back using the same old storyline again and again. Yes, it's great to have the brothers back I suppose but it's still extremely unoriginal and it's such a pity in my mind that Myst players would agree to such a linear storyline. ::rolls eyes:: Yes we know the brothers are evil, yes they are blemishes to Atrus' family, but can't we PLEASE move on and try something NEW.

In my opinion, what makes Myst such a great universe is the depth of it and its characters. This isn't done by rehashing one subject as it is of using familiar characters as a means of forwarding the storyline.

Atrus and his family is the center of the Myst universe. By repeatedly using familiar characters to further the storyline (Even when the story does not directly involve the characters), the developer has the advantage of having a history of the characters to push off of and manipulate, newcomers to the series benefit by seeing characters that are well-grounded in the "ambiance" of the game, and fans of Myst get an added bonus of seeing the Myst universe, its characters, worlds and events - both fleshed out and expanded upon.

I would in fact be less enthusiastic about a storyline that did NOT involve familiar characters, even more so if it was done by someone other than Cyan. Less familiar characters means more new characters, and while new characters aren't a bad thing, unless they are well thought-out enough, you may end up just muddying the water of the Myst universe with characters, plots and events that probably don't create as lasting an impression for players.

Especially since the Myst games so far are still in the time frame of Atrus and his family, I don't see any reason why the storylines wouldn't be molded around and/or through them.

I'm with you on not wanting Myst4 to be "unoriginal," but I believe that it can be original AND use familiar characters - it's all how the developers design the story around the characters. Hopefully Ubisoft Montreal is up to the challenge.

o_o ... you really misunderstood me.

DROP MY FAVORITE FAMILY. LOL, come on, when Myst 3 came out I was yelling at the end of the trailer with Saavedro screaming that if he hurt Atrus I would drag out my dull axe of revenge!!

^_^ I LOVE Atrus' family and of course that had BETTER me the main center of focus but... "to dwell in the past is to die in the present" I want the storyline to continue. The brothers are gone, introduce something new - some new strange obstacle for Atrus and his family.

I don't think we're dwelling in the past though. Myst is the great soap opera - the bad guys just won't go away. Ghen, after being trapped on Riven, figured out how to get out. Saavedro by a sheer twist of fate, found the book that Atrus planned to be lost and put behind him. One of the biggest conflicts in Myst is trying to put away old demons, but they just won't go.

We know that SOMETHING happened to the linking books in Myst, but we don't know for sure WHAT it was. Additionally, we've always been "trailing" Sirrus and Achenar - always having to deal with the consequences of their actions, why not be able to actively be involved in their actions, before they become consequences?

It was Yeesha's hand that set them free,
To torture their father with their insanity,
The brothers grim have come to play,
In both their eyes it is their day.

A father's love can never die,
the thought of murder pasted him by,
Not sure if burning would end their lives,
He hid them away in his archives.

Remember when his father burned,
the very first world from which he learned,
He was unsure of that world's fate,
His sadness full, it was too late.

So how could he bring himself to burn,
All he wanted was for them to learn,
What could this time imprisoned do,
To the minds and angers of these two.

We come full circle, in family ties,
We learn the truth, beyond the lies,
What became of, the vicious twins,
Will father and daughter pay for their sins?

Well with Myst 3, i find that i was looking at a story from the eyes of a man that has been torn apart mentaly. You still get part of the story of what the brothers did to Saavedro's world. And you have to go through Saavedro's lessons of insanity from his point of view.

But again, we only have touched on the world of the 2 brothers. And i hope Myst 4 answers some of the questions we havd been waiting for.

To stay true to some type of continuity, I much doubt these two will change their ways or reconcile with their father by the end. The revelation may be that Atrus will be forced to destroy these two, and realize that no matter how strong love is, it may never bring someone back once they've stepped over that threshold that is madness or wickedness. Yeesha was very clear in her words in Uru, when making reference to her brothers. They were bad to the core, to the end.

I was just struck with a hope! I hope this game gives me nightmares! For real! I want Sirrus and Achenar to be SO CREEPY and bad that I see Saavedro's viewpoint better, AND understnad more of their father's love for them. And, omigosh, I hope there is at least one scene, where one of them steps out of the shadows and grabs me. And laughs evily. And I hope there are at least 5 ways to lose, all of which are creepy and very realistic. I want Sirrus and Achenar to kill me at least twice before I get it right. *shivers*

Ok, bye. I have to go watch Smallville.

I don't beleive what that guy says. It's totally possible that Atrus was skilled enough to actually write the prison books.

I mean, sure, the D'ni made actual prison AGES, but Atrus...he seems to think outside the box, beyond apparent limits. As does Yeesha, Only at a much greater scale.

Thinking about the two brothers makes me wonder...will they be working together in some respect in the kidnapping or not? Even if they deal with the fact that they are in separate books, I got the feeling that they did not like each other. Achenar HATED Sirrus for double-crossing him. Sirrus, I think, disliked Achenar's brutality after a while--he kept killing all his subjects. And Achenar's letter in Mechanical clearly shows his hate for Sirrus' greed. I got the feeling in the bad endings in Myst that one brother would have destroyed the other.

Will "brotherly love" prevail in Revelation? Or will they just turn on each other after a brief partnership? I can't wait to find out!

After watching and pausing the trailer, the hand that reaches for the girl, looks very young and slender (?) Could these be the brothers at a tender age? Perhaps (insert the limb I'm going to climb onto) there was a daughter never spoken of. Two jealous siblings, looking to oust the youngest rival eh? Atrus never mentions her because of guilt. I've been thinking that maybe it was Catherine chasing Yeesha in that scene. For example, maybe Yeesha disobeyed her parents by playing with the necklace after she was told never to touch it, and ran when Catherine caught her at it.

Pa'lua, I could use a little explanation of where you draw the line between spoilerish and non-spoilerish comments. So far, all I've seen in this thread are speculations about the meaning of what we all see in the teaser. Since none of us actually know anything, they're all just guesses, though some are probably better guesses than others. How do we know whether our guess is a spoiler or not until we actually play the game and find out if we were right?

OTOH, if guesswork is considered spoilerish, then what can we safely say about the trailer other than "oooo, pretty!"?? Which would make for a pretty boring thread.

By definition, the teaser gives us factual information about the game that we did not have before, so watching the teaser would seem to be the spoiler. The discussion here doesn't seem to be adding any facts that aren't already there.

I'm confused!

I must say I am looking forward to Pa'lua's reply to JustBrett's post, since threatening to remove a post (paradoxically by saying you're NOT going to remove a post) is fairly strong. I think JustBrett is precisely right, in that speculation cannot by any stretch of the imagination be interpreted as "spoiler" information.

I think the point Sri was making was to please steer the discussion *away* from speculation based on material which is only visible if you choose to view spoiler content (such as the E3 trailer, which I for one have chosen not to watch for this very reason).

hey, hey, hey...

Nobody is threatening anyone here. Just issuing a warning.

This IS the SPOILER-FREE area of the forum, so speculations are OK. Any other ideas based on what we have seen or further speculations based on what the developers of the game have posted here or in other forums is a little more than speculations. That is where the line must be drawn. And that's what mods are here for.

Pa'lua is a lady. One of my favorite mods (not that I don't like other mods http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) and she could have simply moved the thread without warning us. That would have been fine and no one would be complaining. Instead, she was kind and just asked us to keep our spoiler siren on while we're posting. Please, do not question her for doing her job. She gave us a warning. Let's think twice while posting in this area or... lets simply post in the other area. As simple as that.

Excuse me but I wasn't making a threat. I seldom move topics from one forum to another, but neither do I shirk from my duty as moderator if I feel a topic needs to be moved. I was just trying to prevent the thread from being moved. There have been one or two topics that started out in the non-spoiler forum that ended up being moved because the speculation became less speculation and more information.

True, you can watch the trailer and be spoiled some, but then if you don't want to watch it you don't have to. The point of the non-spoiler forum is for those who wish to be spoiled as little as possible still have a place in the forum to talk to other fans and like-minded people about Revelation.

All I am asking is that everyone have a little consideration (and I don't think that's a lot to ask) for these people and be careful what they post in the non-spoiler forum.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that I felt threatened by Pa'lua's post, and I'm sorry if anyone took it that way. I'm fairly new to this board, and I was simply trying to get a sense of the community standards so I can avoid being a "bad citizen" by local expectations.

The sense I'm getting is that speculation is okay, as long as it is based strictly on the material in question. When someone starts citing other material in support of one's train of thought, that would be too revealing to those who don't want to know about that material. For example, someone might not consider this teaser to be too spoilerish, so they would be willing to read this thread. But they might not want to hear about related material from the E3 trailer, screenshots, comments by Team Rev members, etc.

Okay, I've got the message, and will restrict any of my extended speculations to the spoiler forum. Thanks for the clarification.

I think some people would refer to the trailer itself as a "spoiler".

However, I think the trailer is the bare minimum information you should have when browsing the site.
I mean, if you don't want to learn ANYTHING about the game at all, theres no point in you being here, is there?

You can't expect to walk into even a non-spoiler thread and expect people to be talking about the weather.

Thats OK Paula. Sorry if I overreacted before.
I know how annoying spoilers can be once a game is released - or if someone finds out stuff before a game is released.
Just this concept of official materials being considered "spoilers" is a bit foreign to me.

I'm the bad guy who introduced the word "threaten" into this thread a page or so back. I apologize. My knee-jerk reaction to the idea of pulling a post for speculation was that it was a little silly, but I stand chastised. I still contend that if you want to land in (won't name the age; spoiler) again this September with no pre-conceptions whatsoever, you're tempting fate by engaging this Revelation forum at all. Sorry.

David, I appreciate your apology and I agree...I know a number of people who are avoiding this forum like the plague. Still, there are fans who want the opportunity to interact with other fans and even understand that some spoilage is inevitable. So we try to accomodate as many fans as we are able by providing a choice of non-spoiler and spoiler forums.

It's a very thin line that we have to navigate upon between the two.

Hears my theory: Atrus makes it look like he destroyed the books but he realy hid them somewhere. Then when they moved near the cleft he took them with him and stuck them in that vault.

Which raises if he did this with his sons did he do it with his father??? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I posted this on another topic, but it fits here better:

The ages the borthers were trapped in Myst are surely desolate voids. Maybe Atrus (or Catherine) though this was a bit cruel (having pity on the murderous beasts http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif) and wrote two prison ages for their sons (The red and blue books in the trailer). Yeesha might not have been told of her brothers and trapped herself in one of their ages, or maybe she unknowingly left a linking book for one of the brothers to escape?

There should be plenty. Sirrus and Achenar ruled a tyrannous empire that stretched across all the Ages of Myst... supposedly dozens of Ages that they exploited and destroyed. We've never actually looked into this time period, except for the evidence of their sickness in Myst and the quick ploy they conjured in Narayan. Myst IV should definitely reveal something about their lives as despots.
