Two words: ear protection. Those planes are loud. Most of their former crewmen suffered some hearing loss as a result.

For some of us, it wouldn't be much of a loss, but it appears that your wife listens to you. She's probably worth hearing well.

cheers

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Hey congrats man!

I second the request for pics. Actually, if you feel up to it, the B-17 cockpit modeller(s) might appreciate if you could take pics around the cockpit, especially things like the back wall and generally obscure areas that may not be well documented. As well, maybe close-ups of little things like gauges and signs, ideally take perpendicular to the surface. Will certainly help them bring the 17 to us all sooner http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

There are a few WWII planes coming near me in June. I wish I could fork over the cash for a ride in the P-51 (trainer I guess). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If anyone lives in KY, Bluegrass Airport has a few WWII planes rolling in June 11th or 12th (that weekend).

Although not nearly as cool as a ride anyone in the Phoenix Arizona area can get an up close look and very articulate history of "Sentimental Journey"

The old beauty is stationed at the AZ chapter of the Commerative Airforce from late fall until spring.Then a summer tour each year.

The best part of a visit there is that there are always old vets that flew B-17's around the museum and most of them are happy to bend your ear if you show a little courtesy.

http://www.arizonawingcaf.org/events.htm Here is this years schedual, last I checked it was $400 for a 25 minute flight but that has been awhile so maybe more(yikes)

OK, I went on the flight. A few days ago actually. It was way coooooool. I have some pictures, but I can't figure out how to insert them into a post!!! Anyways, the flight was about 45 minutes and we basicly were allowed to get up and roam about at will once we were in the air. Most of the guns were clamped down but you could swing one of the cheel 0.50 cals, they are hefty! Could take out a tiger or two with one shot, no problem. I was surprized how little the airplane was. The cockpit is actually kind of snug and a 6 footer can only stand fully erect in the radio room. It wasn't as noisy as I expected either. You could carry on a conversation if you shouted, certianly not as noisy as a rock concert or loud nightclub. If I can get some directions how to add pictures, I'll get them up asap (I have Win XP).

This is how to post a pic you need to have it uploaded first to someone like www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) Its free!

Then once you have that done you can use the IMG button above your post while making it to insert the link. Or when at Photobucket you can copy the link and past it in your text. Like am this pic below.

Can't beat a ride in a B17, tho' I've walked thru' the "Sally B" B17 - I'm a member of the supporters club.

I have flown in a PBY Catalina from North Weald in Essex to Duxford in Cambridge. I sat in the fuselage blister with oil from the port engine trailing over the blister glass. Atmospheric! That was the PBY which tragically later crashed off the Isle of Wight with loss of life. It was written off.

I've also flown in the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's DC3 when it was a Royal Aircraft Establishment DC3 in the 1980s.

...but still can't beat a B17 - deep jealousy, but I do hope it's all you expect. Watch out for those 109s with their uber mk108s...!

You need to get your pics on the web first (upload them) - if you dont have space on the web try something like www.uploadit.org (http://www.uploadit.org) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif try to keep them not too big (800x600 is great).

Then you add the URL's here like
<pre class="ip-ubbcode-code-pre">

</pre>

like the following:

Yes, we did get to walk the gangway through the bomb bay. They had the bomb doors closed when we walked through. That netting only comes up to about your knees and the gangway is only about 6" (150 mm) wide. That gangway is the only way to get from the back end (where the 4 gunners and radio operator are) to the front end (where the pilots, navigator and bombardier are). It would be a real tight squeeze when the bomb bay was stuffed with real bombs.

Smokin256

I walked through the B-17 at the Evergreen flight museum (home of the Spruce goose) in MCminville Or. last summer. You couldn't go forward of the bomb bay when I was there because some fat guy had managed to get himself wedged between the bomb racks the day before. So yeah I can attest to the tight squeeze! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
