I share your thoughts. Actually the south pacific theatre Solomons area can be considered almost a secondary theatre (Black Sheep fame not withstanding) and not be that much out of whack with a forgotten battles type theme. Even without carrier aviation, it would be worthwhile.

Although the Japanese planes were outclassed by 1943, if you don't take maintenance problems, quality control, and poor group tactics into account, the Japanese did have some fighter planes that would be competitive.
