This is only a minor thing, but it's something i've wondered about for a while.
Why is there an extra glass plate on the front of the cockpit (in front of the gunsight) on some Bf-109s and not others? For eg. it's present on the F-4 but not the F-2. It reduces visibility a little, as there's an extra metal bar.

Probably an armor plate for more protection.FW190 didn`t need this cuz it had 50mm glass plate in the front from the start of production AFAIK.

I'm gonna guess here that the wooden tail was due to lack or resources later in the war but I may be wrong.

This is also true, but Pierre Clostermann mentions in his book about some later 109 versions wich had the tail made from hard plastic.
The apsence of the armoured glass on some F and even G models is terribly annoying. This evening I was flying in the LW campaign, and I had a F-2, well we engaged some vvs planes, and after we shot down all of them except a Mig-3, I had the bad inspiration to do a Head on with him. He simply killed me. That's all.

So it's for extra armour?

Yes, it was also installed on some E models.

yes it´s extra amour... and wrong/bad modelled like 109 cockpits are used to be.. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

the upper amour strut shout fit with the upper strut of the windscreen.. but... we will get a lot of new cockpits and the old are as bad as they are since il2 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
