As someone whose online experience is normally limited to flying to the middle of the map and then getting shot down by someone I didn't see in about 10 secs, I have seriously considered bailing out of internet games for good.

However, last night a gentleman called LA7 PIP, his friend Baal and another chap called B16Enk all offered me advice and Pip even took me up for a staged engagement in which he showed me the many things I have been doing wrong.

It's community spirit that makes a really great online game and these guys have the perfect attitude. In a game which revolves around building up kills its nice to see friendly people willing to coach - not mock - newbies.

My thanks go out to the three of you - and to any other pilots out there who have helped scared newbies like me persevere when we felt like quitting.

Great /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You should join a squad - there you'll see that kind of behaviour all the time. Best of luck!

Great to hear! Sometimes DF servers attract a great selection, sometimes, not. Glad you struck it lucky!

I second that opinion above though - get yourself into a squadron, most of those advertising in the squadrons forum train inexperienced pilots and it's added a whole new dimension to this game for me. Also, tuition is much easier over voice comms /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Could anyone recommend a squadron? I'm really not much good in the air, but am willing to learn, and pride myself on my sportsmanship. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Look for one in your neighbourhood. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I fly with the European Airforce http://www.europeanaf.org/indexie.html, they got English, Scottish, Czech, Italian and Norwegian squadrons.

Welcome!

One thing is for sure and that is that this is a great community, but only because of the pilots/players (shame UBI seems to be neglecting us at the moment) who all started somewhere.

For sure join a squad, and as SpinSpinSugar said the voice comms will help a lot! You will learn a lot.

I do reccomend using the Full Mission Builder, despite the steep learning curve, to get more proficient. Especially with landing as this is the only time your score (if you are score motivated) will credit you properly. Bailing out etc will, of course, still result in a score being registered but only a percentage!

The Quick Mission Builder is also good and you can select take off and landing here too.

Perhaps UBI could consider a training forum? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Happy Piloting!

Re: Squadrons, take a browse through the squadrons forum Geldo - most of the main players are there. I could recommend my own (ICAG) as being very helpful with beginners, but as the chap above pointed out one of the most important things is to find one that suits your geographical location.

Main things to consider, I'd suggest, would be...

o Location - not only because of connection speeds, but also timezones for practice sessions.
o Flying Frequency - Look for a squad that suits your own preference with regard to time commitments. Some fly a lot more than others.
o Realism - Another pointer would be whether you wish to fly mainly just for entertainment, or whether you wish for realistic settings and participation in co-ops, online wars, etc.
o Allegiance - Many of the squadrons specialise in either Axis or VVS flying so if you're a big fan of the 109 or P39 that needs to be taken into account.
o Role - Although many squadrons have elements of ground attack and fighter flying, some specialise in just one or the other.

If you do wish to join a squadron, you're in a good position - it's a buyers market currently, there are an awful lot of squadrons advertising and a relatively short supply of pilots!

Hope you find what you're after, it makes a big difference!

Cheers!

Thanks gentlemen - your advice is extremely valuable to me. I'll have a good look on the forum and find a suitable match (like dating all over again http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

Also if you haven't got it already then get hold of Hyperlobby : http://hyperfighter.jinak.cz/

Most squads meet there and all the online wars are there too. Find squad websites (look in squad forum and main IL-2 squads page) and take a look around there are (as has already been mentioned) lots of options - good luck ! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
