Make a third (3rd) Option -- cycle through options like radiator cycle control.

SpeedBar OFF
SpeedBar COMPASS
SpeedBar EVERYTHING

Simmers who grow deep into FB need the Option of turning the screen numbers 100% OFF

My SpeedBar helped my simming when I got FB, but now I always fly with real compass only, even in Yaks where in some Yaks the compass requires negative gee joystick to float compass into view and mental calculations to use (numbers reversed).

--------

I wish they would move the Hud Text with all the Engine Boost messages to the bottom right screen instead of the middle right of screen, and convert the long text strings to cryptic abbreviations (some of the Boost text stretches near the center of the screen http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

Where exactly did Oleg reportedly ask this question? I haven't seen any evidence that he has made these suggestions.

the solution is good.

only heading displayed. usefull on yaks or so..

and if you dont wanna see the ugly red thing, just set the key control to have it disappear of your screen

My suggestion? A view mode like the "Shift-F1" gunsight perspective that gives you a clear view of the compass if it's obscured (as is the case on many a Russian machine). The heading in red text at the bottom of the screen all the time would detract from the overall experience. I hope Oleg considers a special compass perspective, and if not... I just hope the Il-2 Stab crew can find out how to switch off the heading text.

I really hope he does not do this (take away the full off option). I have not used the speedbar on any plane since my first month of the original IL2, and I sure don't want to be forced to us it now.

Can't, they are talking about leaving the ugly red thing on all the time--with no way to turn it off.

What would be very cool is something like in LOMAC for the icons : some kind of formatting string set in a config file that lets you define exactly what you want. With some simple keys like :

%ms = speed in metric
%is = speed in imperial
%mh = altitude in metric
%ih = altitude in imperial
%c = heading

etc.

Then you just choose what to display, for example :

"%mh meters\n%ms km/h\n heading %c"

Would mean :

2150 meters
236 km/h
heading 153

Then you can choose if that speedbar is shown or not just as before.

As a programmer I can't see how this can be difficult to do. Everybody can have exactly what he wants and the "scripting" method to do it is as simple as possible.

I posted in GD that I'd rather have Imperial units (ft, mph) than this option. But I should think we certainly need the option to be able to turn off all onscreen text. I doubt Oleg would overlook this, though.

Besides, I always find it very humorous to see such "change this" threads for a game that HASN'T EVEN BEEN RELEASED YET.

Why don't you wait & see, and have faith that Oleg will do the right thing?

And if he doesn't, you still can file a complaint, I think you still know where ORR is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

I would still like an explanation as to why this thread was started at all. The original link states that Oleg was asking for this. If he was asking for this, I would have expected him to do so via the UBi Soft ORR, as that is his normal way of communication with users. So far as I can see, Oleg has not done so. So until the original posters can provide evidence regarding their statements, I would have to doubt Oleg raised the subject at all.

Go into the conf.ini file of FB.. canged Hudlog=1 to Hudlog=0. That will remove the ionfo on the right.

I dont see what the big deal is about the speedbar. Leave the speed bar on in "FR" servers... if it bugs you then toggle it off... if someone is in a plane they cant see the compass in they have the option of leaving it on. It isnt like it gives you some kind of super advantage or anything.

Someone suggesting we have the option for metric and Imperieal units selectable for users based on personal choice? I'm US myself, but using metric for simplicities sake is sooo much easier. If you think it's hard getting on the same page when discussing performance or tactics, imagine the confusion of dealing with metric, Imperial or knots! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

quote:
Originally posted by Bearcat99:

Not true Bearcat.

For example, some aircraft (*Cough* FW-190 *Cough*) get instrument damage whenever anything on the plane is hit.

But the sppedbar will still show your heading and speed, even if you lose the instruments.

So, there is an advantage to having it on.

Now if all aircraft have the same chance to lose their instruments, then I dont see a problem, but that is not the case in the game as it is now. Some of the older planes dont display that type of damage as the newer DM's show them.

I highly doubt that this was done intentionally. It just appears to me that Oleg has gotten better with graphics since the original release of IL2. Thus, each plane that is done gets better and more detailed visual damage models. The 190 is a prime example of this. As I recall, Oleg himself worked out the complex DM on the plane just before the release of AEP in order to give the customer what they wanted.

Speedbar levels the playing field between the aircraft that have a damage model for instruments, and those that dont.

My opinion only...

Not even an issue with me if it's gonna be in Metric. I'll be reading the instruments. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I never thought about the SpeedBar much, it's too low in the corner for me.

I'd probably use it if I could move it around on the screen, placing it where I want it.

Digits are easier to read than obscure dials that's for sure.

Everybody is going back to dial watches the last few years. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Dials are easier to read than digits once you are familiar with the dial itself--think watch dial and how we know it by heart. Good pilots know their dials. Glass cockpits cause much confusion in the cockpit. Glass cockpit simming is why I will never play LOMAC until they add some real cockpits...

Actually, taped instruments like in the pic are the easiest to use, some early uses of Tapes were F~106 and Colonial Vipers (ya I remember that TV show).

As a pilot that has a lot of hours flying gauges, I can personally say the glass cockpits are a gift from GOD. They are as revolutionary as the HSI was over a standard Heading Indicator with a separate VOR, and the implimentation of GPS over LORAN. As far as causing confusion in the cockpit? Not a chance. But that could be the case for a PC pilot though. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Colonial Vipers, hehe...funny, the Cylon ships always reminded me of JP bombers, with the 3rd "command" seat behind the pilot/co-pilot....

My suggestion is to lift that wonderful feature of Janes, where one can put a popup of up to 3 instruments in any corner of the screen, and even adjust the size of the popup

Looks like there tape gauges galore, even in glass pits. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The C-130J has one of the most advanced glass pits of it's kind, IIRC. I believe it's the first plane certified by the FAA to fly with the eng intruments not required to be visible during operation. The computer will switch to the eng inst. screen if there's a problem with the engines. I think they're tying to put me out of a job. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif The FADEC will also tell you what the problem is when it's time to determine the problem and repair it.

I've always wanted to turn the speedbar off - but since some aircraft you can't see the compass, it wouldn't be quite fair.

I'd like the server side option. As with any setting, you don't like it = fly elsewhere http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I view this as a 'sim' and want as much sim as possible - including uses gauges to fly with. And if shot up - that just adds to the immersion.

I hope Oleg makes this an option - and I hope all PF aircraft have a viewable, working compass http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
