Is it worth parting with hard earned cash to upgrade from TIR1 to TIR2 ?

I can't say as I'm still using TrackIR v1 myself, but if it's working well I'd say stick with it until you need to upgrade. Afterall, they both do the same thing right?

On the other hand, if you've got the disposable cash, go ahead and get one and give/sell your old one to a flying buddy. Spread the joy so to speak.

I upgraded and all I can say is "not really". It's a smoother and never loses tracking as easily but otherwise it does the same job. I had the money to burn so I'm quite happy with it. The thing is with TrackIR 2 I use a reflective ball and I didn't with TrackIR 1 so I'm not too sure if a lot of the preformance is more down to the ball.

If you can afford it and are willing to sell the old one then go on, but if it's a hard decision due to the expense then version 1 is fine for you.

I use a reflective tracking ball contraption with my V1. It didn't really perform the way I expected until I did this, but now it doesn't skip a beat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I've said this on many other threads & will repeat it again- this TrackIR ( or equivalants) is the single best improvement in this flight sim than you can possibly imagine! Once you get past the very short learning curve there is simply no going back to the hat switch.

They must put their hardware with a better smoothness period it's the greatest but they need to put it together...SMOOTH it's a must and it is NOT yet perfect and i want perfect for the tir.
The refresh rate is NOT GOOD ENOUGH>> and i can't beleive they can't fix that yet.
Like the owner and tech said to me " it depand on what do you call smooth"

Sorry but for my Smooth is smooth that mean exactly like moving your head ingame like the smoothness of the mouse but IT IS NOT>>>>>>

AND i beleived that with a good hat joystick with a great setup of your views with smooth and realfast responses is an advantage over the track ir. The hat are smooth and you can detect ennemy better that track ir.

I tested all, tweaked everything and no one will make ne beleive not til the new smoothness of the track ir 3.

But i'll never never never never go back on hat joystick.... no way! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I use a headset and mic too. I made my tracking ball contraption from about $4 worth of supplies. Pictures and description can be seen here: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=400102&f=49310655&m=15310285&p=1 Make sure to view the whole thread for all the options and configs. I put my hat on and my headset over that. It works flawlessly...as long as I remember to turn my TIR on before I enter the sim. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Can you provide more info about TR3? I have recently bought a TR2, and very happy with it. Curious to what features TR3 has?

I had the 'money to burn' so I upgraded from Tir1 to Tir2. There is a noticable difference between the two. As said above, Tir2 is smoother, doesn't loose track and re-centers better that Tir1. For instance, with Tir1, if I quickly moved my head to check my 6, it would usually stutter as it couldn't keep up. I developed the technique of quickly returmnng my head to allow the Tir1 unit to regain the tracking dot and then try checking my 6 again. Kind of annoying really. Also, if the tracking dot left the detection area, it wasn't particularly well centered when it returned. Now with Tir2, I can literally move my head as fast as I would want to and there is no stutter. Also, I have tried to trick Tir2 by covering the tracking dot, moving my head, and then uncovering the tracking dot, but it always picks up in the right place.

There is no doubt that Tir2 is an improvment on Tir1, but is it worth the upgrade price? That depends on your budget. Try to sell your Tir1 to someone to make it a sweetener for upgrading as I did.

The ONLY problems I have with my TIR 1 is when I move my head too far to the side, and holding my head steady.

I have a whole strip of dots across the back side of a baseball cap. This makes it much easier for the TIR to find the reflection than a single dot or a diamond cluster. The only reason it loses the reflection is if I pivot my head so that the profile of the dots is no longer picked up by the TIR. This happens mostly when I get too excited during combat. I have not problems moving from center to check six one side and then the other. It never loses track and can move as fast as I move my head. I just have to be sure not to move my head too far. Centering is never a problem. AND I sit on a swivel chair. Occasionally I do have to hit the recenter button.

Using the ball solution would fix any problems of pivoting my head too far to the side, and I think I could even live down my wife's laughter, but she'd tell everyone else... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

The problem with holding my head still is an obvious one. My perception is that the TrackIR is not as sharp as the mouse because your hand and mouse are steadier and more practiced at these precise movements than your head. Try controlling your mouse with another body part that is not so well trained, say your chin or foot, and see how accurate the mouse is. Trying to hold my head still all the time also makes me tense and tired faster. But pilots had physical tension and especially combat flying was exhausting, so why not. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

In all, I'm sure there is room for improvement, and I think the TrackIR (or a similarly good tracking system) is one of the most importnant peripheral devices a flight simmer can have. No support for TrackIR is one of the main reasons I hardly ever fool about with CFS3 and CFS2. (Well, there are several other obvious reasons, but I would fool with it more often if I didn't have to fight the view system so much.) But I can think of better things to spend the money on than updating a system that already does function quite well.

C!

Well, she certainly has her go at teasing me about playing games, and sure our friends know about my game playing, and she "tells on me" plenty. But she also knows that I'm there for her and that I make sacrifices for her (including not flying as much as I'd like to).

Actually, if I'm honest I think I would be able to enjoy FB as much knowing that a glowing ball is protruding from my forehead. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Just kidding. The strips I use work pretty well actually; well enough that I don't feel like fooling with other solutions. But if I did I would probably try a scaled-down version of the ball solution first. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I'd been toying with the idea of upgrading my TrackIR to TrackIR 2 but was put off by the price wondering if it would be worth it. With the price dropping to 63 here in the UK I took the plunge and it arrived this morning.

I uninstalled my old TIR and set it all back up and was pleasantly surprised by the smooth tracking especially playing IL-2:FB and a marked improvement also in Lock On. It seems to be less prone to losing the object it's tracking. I'm off work with the flu so I have been using it this morning with bright sunshine streaming through the window reflecting off other surfaces and yet the TIR2 still kept tracking the cluster of dots I use on a headband attached to my microphone headset. This was all using the default install settings so there is still plenty of scope to tweak the device. For the best results for both TIR1 and TIR2 I made a headband from elastic to fit to my headset so I would'nt have to keep sticking dots to my forehead. I use a four leaf clover type layout of four dots with a fifth dot in the centre.

My only gripe is the TrackIR2 does not come with a USB extension cable like the TrackIR1 did and although they increased the length of the cable it oly just reaches my tower case under my computer desk.
