It's called taran in Russian, and they used it on occasion when they were pissed off.

Hmmm... I thought they used taran when there was no ammo left?

The first Russian taran was when the pilot took off without ammo to defend his base. Here's a photo of Ekaterina Zelenko the only woman in the world to successfully bring down an ememy plane by ramming.

Hmmm. Didn`t know that. Did she die from it? Most pilots who rammed never made it.

Here's a link to the page with all the info. She died in the crash but she took some with her. She received a posthumous award from Gorbachev decades later.

Can't say that this source is 100% reliable, but there's a link on www.airwar.ru (http://www.airwar.ru) to the personal web page dedicated to ramming. Here's the link (russina language) http://aeroram.narod.ru/
It describes in detail differetn ramming techniques used by Soviet pilots, it also lists pilots that performed ramming. The author of the page summarises 12 books on the subject and 3 journal articles. So according to him, only 37% of pilotes who performed taran died as a result. Russian pilots began to ram during WWI. The technique was to hit enemy plane with your plane's gear (gear wasn't retractable on the planes of that era). The fist pilot to try this was Nesterov. He died as a result of his taran however.

Whether ramming is "historical" or not is not open to question: it happened, and not just among Russians.

What is galling is how the sim treats collisions, often allowing one plane to fly off undamaged while the other loses a wing or explodes.

This is caused by lag online. I have never flown away from an offline collision without some sort of damage.

Just don't ever again say women can't drive or whatever... - just wouldn't wish to have her behind you when you get stuck in traffic one lousy morning. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
