Well, I've had the IL-2 AEP for about six weeks now. Once I got the joystick perameters the way I wanted I got really good at formation flying, sucessfully completing missions, and of course - dogfighting. All offline, mind you.

Now, having attained newfound confidence with my abilities with AEP, coupled with some actual flight experience on my part, I figured I could just mosey my way into the online world and show you kids a thing or two.

That's when I, well, preverbially "woke up".

I consistently got my a** handed to me on a silver platter.

What in God's name is up with you guys?! Are you all technically perfect homicidal maniacs? For my devastated ego's sake - please go easy on the new guy! PLEASE!!

You guys are good... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Erm... nope. We're not psycho maniacs with chainsaws. We're psycho maniacs with 30mm cannons! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

Actually, we've just been playing online for a VERY LONG TIME, which means we've learned how to fly on the edge for a long time. I'm by no means perfect, and I'd have to say I do a lot more of getting shot at then shooting, but it'll come to you. It just takes a long time. But it's definitely worth it. Once you get that first kill....

In accordance with P1's statement, yes, fly lots of planes, but also pick one or two and get really good with them. They should be your default picks and you should learn how to use them in every situation, against every plane. Once you go online you never go back, trust me.

I've always had a romantic fixation on the big American boom-and-zoom "thunder planes" - the P-47, P-38, and the like. Hope I can make those work against you friggin' aces. Ya friggin' Pr*cks... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When one play this game for couple of years what chances are left for you in dogfight? Really you must obtain a lot of playing time and then success will show up. 'Till then go online in coops with easy settings if you want badly online fight (you may as well go on DF servers with easy settings but... well u said it for yourself -- even there you would find some rude guys with no sense of ease for newcomer http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif).

Over time (if u actually still be willing to play IL-2) you're goin' to get in the bottom of this game. And what is more important, discover your favourite plane in the slightest detail, as well as your oppo's. Then you will start dogfight with the right approach, and that is the key for success. Another words, enter the dogfight (when you're not forced to engage in another way) only when all advantage is on your side and when your online oppo have absolutely no chance to fight you back -- that is the dogfight where you're making scenario of battle and eventually outcome like you pleased.

I remember quite a few posts saying something like this "...is this game a rookie-friendly..." or similar. The answer is NO. It is actually very demanding game if you want to go on highest level possible. Basics... well that aren't suppose to be so hard to learn.

check out the squadron forums for a squadron that is in your own timezone that flies your preferred side .. most squadrons are predominantly axis or allied

naturally if you are in Australia I recommend WTE http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Before you head online...go read some sources online about actual combat experiences of pilots and proper air combat techniques. Against the AI you can use just a few manuvers to keep on top...against humans you must use as many manuvers as possible and be thinking ahead like in a chess game. Doesn't always save you but it helps you stop making the stupid mistakes that we've all made that get you shot down quickly.

Certainly whenever I see someone new online (you can tell sometimes) and I do engage them in battle its usually a very short thing because they "let" me shoot them down. Otherwise I never would have even got a shot off as it may have been against an experienced pilot.

Work at it...spend some time, cycle the servers, and team up with a more experienced pilot and watch what they do...see what works and what doesn't.

Thanks for the props P1. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Treetop, your welcome to fly with us, though we mainly fly coops only.

About online flying, there is so much more to it then meets the eye. Besides Human players are a bit more unpredictable to an extint, there is alot of other anomilies like lag and warp to contend with, but its not much of a hassle.

Just keep flying( try coops- more goal oriented than your normal DF servers, except GG, Warclouds, and the such.) and keep your head up. Most guys and gals here have been flying for a year or more and they still have their bad days. Mine happen everyday almost lol. You'll get the hang of it.

Cheers,

Right on, guys (and gals). Thanks for the encouragement. I never really had any intention on giving up, it's just that I had no idea just how comparatively cutthroat the online fight is compared to offline fighting in ace mode.

I'll be back in again, so enjoy all the easy little pot-shots you can while I still suck! It won't last, though.

Then you will pay. You will Allll PAAAYY!! Mwaa ha ha haa haaa haaaaa!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

Here are my tips for FW-190. You can actually apply alot of what is written to the P-47 for example (though convergence would be much less) and there are a few things that go for all planes (grab altitude, gather up with wingmen, etc.). Hope you find them useful and good luck.

I have a suggestion: Look for online tracks. Download them and watch them. I think this is a huge advantage. Will help you see from butcher's eye.
If you search the forum you'll find a lot of great online tracks, that will teach you a lot.
Good luck!!!

It's a biatch aint it? As someone else remarked, I'm glad you're trying to make it work for you in a P-38 or P-47. Guys who are good in those planes I have the utmost respect for.

Now, if you want more frustration just try flying anything blue from before '44 or '45 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif.

As someone said, if you're flying a fighter, gain altitude.

If you're flying cockpit on and a P-47 or P-38, learn to BnZ flawlessly: One thing I did (although I usually BnZ in Dora or TnB in Zeke) was set up a BnZ trainer mission in FMB. I'd put an ace target 1k or more below me and try to get them in a dive to hone my gunnery (it's sometimes easy to suprise people in Cockpit on servers). After you get good at it, change the enemy's heading and practise different situations. It has helped my gunnery tremendously. I know immediately when I've made a mistake online, and that's usually when I overshoot my plane and I should've nailed the guy already. Other than that, check six frequently and roll the plane to get a view under your fuse.

Even after you "perfect" this, still be prepared to get your *** handed to you quite a bit. I've been flying online for a few months and my kill to live ratio is still far from where I want it to be.

Treetop..welcome aboard to online flying. Yep we all get it handed to us more times than not or at least sooner or later. Drop into WarClouds server some night. I fly the Jug 99% of the time. I'm still learning how to fly her. She is awsome once you learn how to fly her buit she is not uber so expect to get shot down alot till you learn how to B&Z properly in her.

Hang in there.

It's exactly the steep learning curve that will keep you from getting bored. You'll have to die 50 times to learn each lesson, and when it finally clicks in *before* you make the same old mistake, and you replace that behavior with one that works, you realize you've reached another plateau of progress.

Then you get your butt kicked for a different reason and start learning all over again.

Have fun with it.
