I used to have this big airplane book and was thinking wasn't there a Polikarpov I-17?? It had 20mm cannon & 4, 7.76mm machine guns?? Max speed low 300mph range looked very sleek?

I'm reading a book right now where a lot of German pilots claim "I-17" victories. This isn't true because the I-17 never entered production as far as I know and they where actually shooting down a different plane, but I can't remember which one. I'll look it up tonight if no one replies with it by then.

Looks a lot like a MiG 3

Oh - very nice.

Like a badly modelled Spit ... but it pre-dates the Spit.

It'd be a pleasent suprise to see that in FB - unlikely (who'd fly it in combat).

There are suggestions that a plane dropped on that La 7 - Is this the guilty candidate?

I've said it before and I'll say it again. N.N.Polikarpov was a brilliant designer.Years ahead of his time.Bureaucrats and Engineers rarely see eye to eye.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

I think it's a rather attractive airplane, though the landing gear does hav an overly complex tone to it, and the vertical stabilisers is a bit odd. Otherwise, it is quite a clean and elegent fighter.

It sort of reminds me of the very early Spitfires, with a very narrow fuselage married to a huge two bladed prop. It is amazing that such an aircraft was made in 1935.

I wonder, did other aviation engineers have any idea what the Russian designers had been putting together?
