Gentlemen,

I thought I'd start this thread so that the many fine DS admin's can get some PR for their servers...we all spend a lot of time working on ours, so here's a chance to help increase your name recognition.

The community has a good backbone of fine servers out there run by some great people, let's hear from you and showcase some of the things that make these servers great.

===========================================

I hope this doesn't degenerate into a which-server-settings-are-best war.

IMHO all the servers with various settings are helping each other. For example, the servers with easy and mid-range settings are helping the "Full Real/Full Difficulty/Full Switch" servers because many sim pilots will find it too intimidating to jump into that level of difficulty right away. So it's good to have more relaxed settings as an entry level choice. Those relaxed settings will attract more flyers who will eventually seek the challenge of more difficult settings. On the other hand the servers with more difficult settings are helping the servers with more relaxed settings because they give sim pilots a goal to reach for. Without goals we can reach for, the whole experience will become stale.

Hope I haven't overstated my point but what I'm trying to say is that all the dedicated servers from the most relaxed settings to the most difficult settings are helping each other.

'nuff said.

This is a nice thread idea, thanks Zen.

I'm the admin for the 380th BG dedicated server. Currently, the server is locked while we play-test and debug our maps. We plan to open the server to the public; perhaps as early as this weekend.

[Server Objectives]

Our server attempts to highlight cooperative game play. As a pacific theatre bomb group that flies in close association with a fighter wing (the 310th vfs), our server features ground-attack oriented scripted missions placed on the various pacific island mapsets. Mission scripts stress the importance of escort and SEAD roles, (and, conversely, bomber interdiction) by including the destruction of heavy bombers as a possible means to win the map.

[Server Settings = Medium Difficulty]

Notables: cockpit on, externals on, padlock on, minimap icon on, speedbar on. Very limited icons.

[Plane Sets]

Japanese A/C for blue with reasonable standins for non-represented but important aircraft (ex. DB-3F for Betty, Ju-87B-2 for Val). U.S. A/C for red with reasonable standins (He-111 for medium bomber role, B-17 for heavy bomber role, etc.).

[Admin]

The server is tightly monitored for conduct and fairness. TK'ing, cheating, and general asshattery will not be tolerated. No ping kick, but unreasonably high pings will be asked to move along and kicked if need be. Constructive user comments and criticism are encouraged through H/L PM and through our forums. This most important means of feedback will be used to enhance the gameplay on our server.

Please consider dropping by and shooting hell out of our bombers when our server goes public! Visit our forum for the latest server info or to contact a memebr of the 310th vFS or 380th vBG.

I assume a quick rundown of server specs/ settings are what you're looking for, so...

FighterJerks on HL

Hardware:
XP2100 / 1 GB Ram

Connection:
10mb ethernet

Mission:
Mostly historical. '43 kuban, with RU allowed HE-111's for bombers (since TB3 wouldn't do too well). Lots of ground targets. TnB fighters and light bombers/ grnd attackers are on the front, while later-years hi-alt escorts/ fighters are rearward. Bombers are based furthest from the action, allowing them time to gain alt prior to thier bomb run.

Limted friendly icons (player name only), minmap path, and speedbar are on.

20 players.

TeamSpeak is avaiable to those who want to use it.

I don't use scripting, but plan to rotate missions as soon as I get more to rotate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh yeah: vulching is considered good form.

EDIT: Autokick is enabled. Sorry, but you really should try to find a server that gives you a better connection http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Autokicking is not in-place, but client and server time speeds as well as properly adjusted lag settings will ensure that only the better ping rated users will have a good time.

The server is usually available 24/7.

The settings are reasonably lax - there are enough "full-real" servers out there to fill that need. This server is a place to just come and have fun and let your hair down with no pre-conceptions. Cockpit is off but icon ranges are severly limited for enemy encounters.

Straffing (I hate the word vulching...) is allowed.

Most of the time the server runs standard dogfigt maps that are available from the 352nd Fighter Group website. From time to time we fire up a scripted mission.

The server is monitored and logged by 352nd_Oscar.

Come by and visit us whenever you want to have some fun.

Nice idea here Zen. Here the War Clouds Contribution to the community.

Server Specs:
P4 3.0ghz HyperThread CPU
1 gig RAM
100mbit connection

There are 3 server running on this Machine. All server are on UBI.com. Yes I said Ubi.com http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

Common Settings for all three are:

Icons: Friend and Enemy have the same settings.
Dot: 15k, Range: 0.01km, Name: 0.01km, Plane Type: 2km, Pilot ID:0.3km

Engine Management: any setting to do with this is enabled

Flight Charateristics: any setting to do with this is enabled

Weather/wind/clouds: all enabled

Map Icons: off

Mini Map Path: on

Speed Bar: on

Limited Ammo : on

Limited Fuel: on

Now here are settings that differ for each server

War Clouds Easy: Locked cockpit-off, padlock-enabled, external views-enabled.

War Clouds Medium: Locked cockpit-on, padlock-enabled, external views-enabled.

War Clouds Real: Locked cockpit-on, padlock-off, external views-off.

All servers are scripted and currently running a 5 map rotation. Missions all are based around ground target objectives. Servers are up 24/7 as long as Ubi Lobby does not drop them off the list.

Just a little background on what we are doing with these servers. Our servers are funded purely through Donations from players in the community. We do not expect donations from anyone to play on the servers. Hosting servers, as all of you know, is an expensive business. We just did not feel that one person should bare the economic responsiblities of the server. I am the server admin (actual cpu itself). Members of various squads are in game admins. They police the servers and make sure no one abuses our fine server and the great pilots that fly there.

Well, I think that's about it. Hope to see some new pilots on the servers.

S~ and happy flying
