What is the difference between the two? (And yes, I have RTFM - I was hoping someone here could elaborate...)

The reason I ask is that, just for kicks, I switched it off and I downed about twice as many aircraft. If I do really well with it off, what am I doing wrong when I have Realistic Gunnery on?

In realistic gunnery the bullets probably depend on the plane speed, target speed, gravity, speed of the bullet, etc. while non realistic doesn't.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

Checked out manual, here you go:

Realistic Gunnery

Deselecting this option produces two effect: one, gun and machine gun bullets travel in a straight line (just like I said); and two the explosive effect of the bullets is multiplied by three.

With realistic gunnery off there are two effects:

1. Bullets do more damage
2. Bullet trajectories are not affected by gravity.
