Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

...Halo was very good. Some of the old ones
still hold up regarding "gameplay" like
Quake 1 and 2(graphics are pretty old but by
no means unbareable). For an outright fun
shooter, I like Call of Duty best.(replay
value isn't that good though...AI is always in
the same place and always does the same thing)
...but it was great fun the 1st and 2nd
time around.

Cheers...

I am currently engrossed in Return To Castle Wolfenstein - particularly a standalone mod/game based on it - Wolfenstein Enemy Territory (bear in mind ET is online only) but RTCW is quite good as a single player as well.

whether it is the best or not I dunno, don't think so but I enjoy it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't often play first person shooters but I am currently enjoying Painkiller (hardcore, ultra-violent 'demon' killing in the style of Doom I/II http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif).

However to enjoy it to its full potential you need a MONSTER graphics card.

Other than that Max Payne 2 is always worth a look.

Farcry's nice, I always liked Hidden and Dangerous coops. But mostly play Call of Duty theese days. Max Payne fans should check out MANHUNT.

Call of Duty. Worth it for the Russian campaign alone. (NOT ONE STEP BACK COMRADES!)

Multiplayer is lots of fun, too.

What about battlefield 1942? Is it better than DOD?

Well, here are my opinions on many of the FPS played recently:

Far Cry: A great game marred by a bad save system and and enemy AI that makes it really hard to use the stealth meter. Great graphics and physics, but the multiplayer isn't anything special. If you have a beefy system, might be worth your time if you can tolerate the save system. Demo is available online.

Call of Duty: A classic shooter with strong single and multiplayer. Worth your money for sure. Be warned though, the structure of the game is such that replay value is about zero(single player only).

Painkiller: Not my type of shooter. Serious SAM style FPS, with lots of enemies and good graphics. Try the free demo before you get it.

Splinter Cell:Pandora Tomorrow: A cool game but like Far Cry a few bad apples keep it from being great. Missions are way too linear for me and the multiplayer was and probably still is buggy as hell. Free demos available for this one also.

Americas Army: My personal favorite when I want to play a multiplayer FPS. It is not easy to get into by any means but worth it in the long run. Constantly being updated with new addons. It's totally free to boot. Give it a couple of days and I almost guarantee you'll like it.

Unreal Tournament 2004: A superb online shooter with just about everything you could ask for. If I didnt like Americas Army so much this is where I would be spending all my time. There is a demo available for this one as well and you dont need an uber system to run this one.

[edit - forgot about Bf1942 and Halo]
Battlefield 1942: It was a great game when it came out but it is starting to show it's age. There is a single player mode but it's not even worth your time. If you are looking for a good multiplayer FPS you might want to check it out, but I would recommend UT2004 over this now. It's "sequel" Battlefield Vietnam is basically the same game transported to Asia with helicopters and unbalanced maps/weapons/etc... Some diehard BF fans like it of course but there are better games out there.

Halo: A great game and certainly worth your time. It's a few years old now but still can deliver excellent gameplay and graphics. One of my all time favorites. I appreciate the fact that it delivers on both the single and multiplayer games, both are great fun.

Hope this helps.

Call Of Duty. Intense single player experience (heavily scripted though which is bad for replay value) and (as of v1.4) EXCELLENT multiplayer experience. As an added bonus, it runs flawlessly in even moderate hardware. Be advised that the graphics are not top of the line (compared to UT or FarCry) but still, if I were to go for a single FPS now, that would be it

After it was refeuled i climbed in.With many manipulations the mechcanics started the turbines.I followed their actions with the greatest of interest. The first one started quite easily.the second caught fire.In no time the whole engine was on fire.Luckily as a fighter pilot i was used to getting quickly out of the cockpit. The fire was quickly put out.The second plane caused no trouble - Adolf Galland (first time in a ME262)

Half life is the best first person shooter ever made!! Great AI! Book quality story and never ending maps!.

But I played all the Quake and others like Unreal are good too. If you don't like role play games that is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.
