I got the gold pkg version and really have only tinkered around.

What's the best way to get started?

I have trouble understanding waypoints and stuff for some reason. It seems I am flying to them and ground controll is yelling at me to stay on target.

Are there any comprehensive guides I can find that will help? The manual doesn't really get too in depth about it (unless there is a manual on the CD I haven't seen).

What are some things you recommend I do? As far as patches go, I am pretty sure I have all the official ones. Any other utilities I should get?

(I think I installed RAF and USAAF wrong....all of a sudden no matter what I am flying, I hear radio chatter from every country whether or not that country is even on the same mission I am).

Anyway. Any newbie tips or links to other threads would be great.

Hope to see you online (is there anywhere besides Ubi people play online?) in a few months.

Welcome,
HyperLobby software is probably your best bet to find games online. Not sure if Kali and Gamespy can see hyperlobby games or not.

Good luck! And above all be patient! It'll take some time to become competitive online. Don't get discouraged, and by all means, read some Flight Combat manuals.

This is a good one to start. Actually, it's one of the best onine at all that I could find:

And...

Then again, I spent my first few weeks getting shot down by rookie AI! Now "Rookies" take seconds to down.

Novice Pilot.

for when you want to get started on mission building:
good place to start is Uberdemons UQMG - takes the strain away from generating complex missions. i.e. makes the FMB simpler by putting a nice front end on it.

Also for different markings sets go to

IL2MAT Manager- can be a bit fiddly to setup buit if you read the instructions you shold be ok.

Hope this helps

If you start a campaign or mission as a higher rank you can boss your wingmen around using the radio (Tab key).

Advice wise, practise, enjoy, learn and don't shoot till you're really close.

Practise deflection shooting, aiming in front of your target so they fly into your fire. Using the quick mission builder and friendly aircraft or empty enemy planes is good for this (Unlimited ammo is good for practise sessions.)
