View Full Version : AI cockpits (or lack thereof)

Does anyone happen to know if it's possible to enable the "no cockpit" view on AI planes. I know it's not possible now, I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tried it or is working on something like this.
I guess the closed nature of IL2 doesn't easily allow for this kind of stuff without the help of Oleg.
Anyway it seemed like a good compromise for the hardcore realistically challenged amongst us.

Do you mean to turn the AI's cockpit on or off? It's my understanding that the AI doesn't actually see, it simply knows where you are all the time. So although you could say that the AI flies with the WW view, it's actually more primitive and advantaged than that and this can't be changed without brand new and more complicated AI.

I could be wrong.

No sorry, I wasn't very clear.
I mean on some dogfight servers you can control AI planes but these can ofcourse only be controlled from the external view. So I was wondering if it is possible to enable the no-cockpit view on those or if someone had a look at that.
It would be a nice compromise to offer lots more planes for those who don't care too much about hardcore realism once Maddox games finally stops development on Forgotten Battles.
Hope that clears it up a bit. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That is not possible nor will it ever be. The AI a/c do not have their full and accurate FM. Because or the work required to do this it is only done for a/c with a fully modeled cockpit.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

I have been thinking this for a while, I dont think the fm should be an issue as most servers that allow AI planes for controll have low realism settings, and as only people who are not bothered flying half moddelled aircraft fly them it wont affect anyone else. Just a crosshairs and some HUD gauges would be enough, I would make more people happy than it would upset I'm sure, considering that you are never forced into any server or aircraft, it would just expand the choices of the game.

Exactly!

We're only really talking about a change of camera positioning here. Since AI planes can be controled (through text editing, granted) on certain servers, a HUD-only view would offer a bit more comfort for those who choose to fly them.

I had great fun on the War-Clouds servers by flying B17's in formations. Trying to make it to the target area, beating off ME's and FW's. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Of course for heavy bombers a HUD view would be quite pointless, but it would however give you a bit more chance to hit something when the plane your controling is equiped with fixed forward firing guns.

Ultimately it's up to the individual player to join servers that allow for this or not.

its definatly needed so all ac can fly in servers with externals off. Let the hosts decide to take them out of fr servers. Also it will give the necassary time to adjust fm performances.

Even make 2 dummy pits bomber pit and fighter pit as temporary so all ai only aircraft in the game can be flyable and can play in all setting types. I think it would make modelers want to work more on a accurate pit if the really like and fly the ai planes alot.

I really wish oleg would do this but he already said he will not, I dont get it,

It would bring so much more to the game especially the eastern front side.

too many people dont want to let this sim reach its full potential, I think that the aspects of the game this would allow are fantastic, it would also stop people whinning about delays to ac releases etc because they would at least have somthing to be going on with if you know what I mean.

Well, I've put up a poll for it in Oleg's Ready Room, please vote if you want it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you agree with this the go and vote and post on the poll in ORR, you know it makes sense http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I totally agree that this would be a great feature. I always use the AI planes, if only we had a no cockpit view for the pilot and gunners, with just a crosshair (ctrl-f1 style)...
