Version 0.2 of the guide now available:
http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/il2guide/download.htm

There is still plenty left to do. Another version may follow soon, so don't fire up your printer just yet...

It has been an entire year since the initial release, and I have been putting off releasing this one for several weeks. There's always just one more thing to add, you know? Anyway, there have been lots of changes, and the guide is much more complete than before. Here's a list of what is different:

Update of the chapter "Introduction"

Removed empty chapter "Air war on the Eastern Front" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif If anyone would like to write on this historical and relevant topic, please contact me.

Substantial progress on the chapter "Machines of war"

Implementation of information from the FW-190 interview

Changes to section on stalls in the chapter "Flight"

Section on changing altitude and airspeed in the chapter "Flight" added

Section on take-off in "Flight" changed

Removed the small section on yaw; the material was simply redistributed

Section on level flight in the chapter "Flight" added

Renovation of the section on turns in the chapter "Flight"

Section on landing in the chapter "Flight" finished

Section on airfield operations in the chapter "Flight" added

Section on spins in the chapter "Flight" finished

Section Gunnery in the chapter "Combat fundamentals" expanded

Small addition to section Situational awareness in "Combat fundamentals"

Began updating section Engine management in "Combat fundamentals"

Finished section Combat procedures (was "How to get started") in "Combat fundamentals"

Chapter "Combat maneuvers" dumped and concept of replacement chapter "Fighter combat maneuvers and tactics" introduced

Finished editing the chapter Ground pounding (was "Ground pounding and combat fundamentals"); some material moved out

Removed chapter "Advanced topics," this material may be reorganized into an appendix later.

Added new chapter "Flying online" (partially incomplete), featuring Dart's "Online etiquette"

Worked on sections QMB, FMB, single missions and campaigns in chapter "IL-2 features and references"

A section on screenshots has been added in the chapter "Technical hints"; otherwise, I didn't touch this chapter with a 10-foot pole

Typesetting corrections, numerous small corrections and updates of outdated resources

Some other stuff that I've forgotten to mention
Here's a list of the stuff that I'll be working on next. (Would like some help if anyone feels like it.)

The entire chapter "Combat maneuvers" ... this is the most ambitious undertaking at the moment

Release of a first version of the IL-2:FB guide (top priority)

More documentation in the section IL-2 features and references

Cleanup of and addition to the chapter "Technical Hints"

Completion of the new chapter "Flying online"

Documentation and advice of view systems in "Combat fundamentals"

Finish the section on engine management in "Combat fundamentals"

Add the section on radio commands to "Combat fundamentals"

Addition of a section "Atmospheric effects" to the chapter "Flight"

Finish the section "Emergency procedures"
Enjoy!

Cheers,
Mike

I had suspected you were preoccupied with some major effort, such as this! Well done!

I assume that 95% of the User's Guide will be easily transferable to Battle of Britain when it comes out also! It will be a great Aid for all of us, and especially all the thousands of newbies who will be attracted to WWII Flight Simming by the upcoming Pacific Fighters product, as well as next year's BofB...

A great contribution to the community, Michapma!!!

A little Victory roll Salute to you:

Danke für den Salut, Fliegeroffizier. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

There are a lot of software-specific details, which I'm not so keen on (just look through the features and technical hints chapters http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif), and these aren't really transferrable. Information on the aircraft, which is time-consuming work but rewarding of itself, isn't transferrable to PF. But the upcoming stuff on combat fighter maneuvers and tactics will be, and much of the rest.

I'll be bumping this thread for a bit to get the news out, they wanted too much money at the t.v. station. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I made the list of changes specifically so that those who had read parts of the guide would know what sections they might want to read this time around. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the kind comments everybody,
Mike

Thank you for the document. I now have something to look over on my flight to San Diego this week.

I found a few errors just skimming over it. It is no big deal just thought I might give you a heads up.

The IAR-80 the He-162 and the Me 262 aren't marked as flyable. No big deal in my opinion

But one of my favorite sections is, how much is too much http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

A small correction if I am allowed.
On page 17 it reads :
The IAR 80 is the only Romanian
fighter aircraft of original production that served in the war, and it served effectively
with distinction. About 120 were made, and it remained in service
until 1944.

The correct (ar almost correct) numbers are :
IAR 80 A/B/C - 240
IAR 81 A - 60
IAR 81 C - 161

Only IAR 80C had 20 mm cannons from all IAR80 series and this I think is not flyable or AI in the game.If memory serves me well we have IAR80A,IAR81A and IAR81C.

That's because it's the IL-2 user's guide. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Zayets, do you have any references? If I have serious references I'd be willing to change it, or if you feel it is misleading I'll change it to read something like "a very small number." The idea is less to provide authoritative statements and more to give those who have no idea about the plane the idea that they weren't buzzing around every airstrip from Paris to Stalingrad.

But I'm very pleased that folks want to read about the aircraft, I put a lot of effort into reasearching and writing that stuff. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
