Question: Will there be another sequel?

Robyn Miller: We do not plan on doing one at all. The story ends with Riven. If we keep creating in that place, it may end up being forced and just plain bad. I've been immersed in the Myst/Riven universe for seven years now. It's time to move on and get to something fresh and new. We get excited with the idea of starting with a blank sheet.

-The Official Strategy Guide for Riven.

I know various people have worked on the Myst games but I'm glad they have made more. I remembered reading that back in the days and I was dissapointed.

It's kinda why they farm out the development work to other studios. It prevents the previous artists & writers from burnout.

I guess Robyn wanted his clear slate, Rand and the fans wanted more. This is probably what caused Robyn to leave Cyan http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Well, a sequel is better than no sequel, but I hope Revelation doesn't have the forced feel. (Exile kinda did, Uru definitely did to me.) Anyway, in the case of forced sequels you just need to lower your expectations. For example, I tell people to go see The Matrix for a good movie with cool action, and to go see the second Matrix for a cool action movie, but not good.

I'm also pretty sure that the majority of people who worked on Riven are no longer at Cyan. People always seem to come and go in game development companies.

As far as Exile feeling "forced," keep in mind how short the amount of time Presto had to work on M3. Ubi's been working on M4 for quite some time and, based on my chats with the gang at Mysterium, I feel quite safe with their knowledge of Myst. They *know* Myst and I can't wait for M4!

Cheers,

Argh! I hate this feeling! I am looking forward to this game SO much that I almost can't bear it. I keep seeing screenshots (like the european box shot) and my body shudders with anticipation, like every atom of my being is overwhelmed with desire to get into this game! I think I'm gonna faint http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif

Ditto what Shortz said. I loved Exile! I won't go so far as to say that I preferred it to Riven or the original Myst, but I still thought it was excellent. I'm suprised at the number of folks that talk it down. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

To clarify:

Robyn left Cyan because he wanted to do something other than video games. That's why his next project which is apparently not happening was going to be a movie (and was supposed to be CG as well, IIRC)

Rand and the rest of the Cyan crew who was left after Riven (which amounted to, I think, Rand, RAWA, Chris Brandkamp, Ryan Miller, Tony Fryman, Josh Staub, and maybe a couple other guys) didn't want to do another direct Myst sequel. Now, "no more direct sequels" does not mean "we never want to touch this universe again". In fact, not wanting to do a direct sequel has really opened up the possibilities for Cyan to tell new stories as they continue to develop the history of D'ni. That's where Uru came from (and its "forced" feel comes more from having a first-person game shoved into it literally in the eleventh hour than anything else... the first few months of the Ubi beta were anything but forced http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), and that's where Something Else (tm) is going. Rand is so very much not finished with D'ni. You can tell just by talking with him for 15 minutes that it's what he *does*, and he does it because he wants to tell those stories and draw those connections between things.

I have no idea what Robyn is up to right now. All I can tell you is he's not working on his film project anymore from what I've gethered.

Alahmnat, I think you are "splitting hairs" as they say. Uru continues the story, just further in the future, not the lovely direct sequel we are going to have with Myst Revelation. Uru is not the "blank sheet" that Robyn Miller talked about. A "blank sheet" game would be a game not set in the D'ni world. Personally, I'd love to see Cyan make a game that had nothign to do with D'ni, a true "blank sheet". I think Dark Screen brought up a really interesting quote from Robyn Miller. I know Robyn left to make movies, but I still think the quote is telling - perhaps it's how Cyan felt at the time, and then they changed their minds - who knows. I love these "blast from the past" comments.

Hey, I just realized that I've responded to two comments Alahmnat made. I'm not following you around, really - it's just that you made some really good comments, in this thread, and over on the other board - very thought provoking.

Getting back on track, I'm glad of a direct sequel - I'm really looking forward to this game. I can't wait to see what Ubi is going to do with the game, and since they've never done a Myst series game, we'll see if it's a fresh interpretation. I think I love Myst Revelation already, and it's not even out!

You have to sit next to young Yeesha and stare at her for 15 silent minutes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

WOW! You guys are so lucky to meet Rand Miller. "Just by talking to him for 15 minutes" trivialises the fact youre talking to Rand Miller!!!

Well I'd like to make another joke i think corona's getting at -
Talking to Rand Miller for 15 minutes is something to pass the time waiting for the Path of the Shell to open up! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

I don't think that there needs to be direct sequels. I think that what keeps these games being sold in stores and people interested is just having the Myst/D'ni universe still existing. I don't mind meeting new characters and seeing different aspects of the d'ni worlds. In fact, I wouldn't mind a game completely out of the storyline of Atrus and his family. The only thing it would have in common with Myst and its children is just it being in the Myst universe. Like in 'The Book of D'ni', there was another civilization, much like the D'ni, still in existance. I bet that there are still other branches of D'ni still living and I wouldn't mind seeing it and seeing the people in it. Sure, this sounds like Uru, but since I haven't played it yet and only heard wonders about it, I can still wish on this aspect.
As for Myst 4, I am indeed very excited for the game. Maybe I will get it for the holidays... I recently got Exile from a friend for my birthday (even though I played it first over a year and a half ago but I had borrowed the game from someone in my dorm). Come on Myst 4!

I personally hope Myst 5 involves Yeesha & the ancient D'ni. This could be after Something Else, but I hope they persue it. It could be very fun, a way to bring the ancent D'ni to life again with all their intricate stories.

I'd like to find out more about Garternay... the D'ni homeworld, before they came to Earth. Ahnonay in POTS was "supposed" to be on Garternay, but we all know how THAT turned out http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
