Hi guys,

Like you I can't wait until the arrival of Silent Hunter 3 - especially now they have confirmed a Dynamic Campaign option.

Question is, I never played Silent Hunter 2 - and now that SH3 is planned for 2005 - would it be worth getting it still?

I've seen on the web that some groups\users have created mods to improve graphics and game longevity - can you recommend these?

Graphically it's nowhere near as stunning as SH3 (from the screens I've seen) - but is it still a good game?

Thanks for any info\advice guys!

Forgot to add....

I'm currently running Windows XP Professional on a 1.4GHz Athlon, 512MB memory, 64MB GeForce3, SoundBlaster Live!, DVD etc. on a 22 inch monitor.

What resolution can I expect from this game? - And is it true it will NOT run on XP?

Thanks again

Out of the box it runs in 800x600, after paying a donation you can download a 1024x768 addon from www.subsim.com (http://www.subsim.com).

Why not get it?
It shouldn't cost that much nowadays.

I don't know about XP but I run it under 2K.

Out of the box Silent Hunter 2 is a big let down. Because of time constraints there were so many things in the game that were done badly, left out or just plain broken.

BUT!

With the aid of some wonderful modders the game is great fun.

The resolution has been boosted up, new weather data has been added, and there are plenty of choices for things like randon campaigns (not, i might add proper career modes although the code for that sort of thing is in the game and was one of the things thrown out of the window so a cerain money grabbing publisher could rush it out...)

Best of all, though is the Das Boot Sound Mod which does exactly what it says. This adds maybe 30% to the quality of the experience.

There is also a full on pacific mod too which is pretty impressive.

You won't have any problem running it with your system i wouldn't think. If you have any more questions on it get yourself over to
WWW.subsim.com (http://WWW.subsim.com) and have a look through the forums. they're a freindly bunch and will answer any questions you have in far more detail than is either healthy or neccesary. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

So yes, you should probably get it!

Phoenix2020 Hi,

It will run on XP but I have the pro SP1a version. I assume it works on the Home xp version. It runs well on my freshly installed XP. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

SH3 will be great as now we have something to do when we are submerged we can roam around and check things out. We can streamline our repair efforts and better organize the crew to max efficiency. God bless them for that! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

buy it,its a very decent game,if you stay still at night and speed up time you can see the constellations move, the sun rises and the sun sets,
i've been playing video games since about 1980 and i have had a couple of all time great video game moments playing this game,When a merchantman comes out of the fog at high speed aiming to ram you and the seas are heavy(i dont know how to finish off the sentence but its way cool).

A couple of not so good things about the game are
1.its too dark sometimes.
2.the landscape and harbours seem to be an after thought.
3.the biggest and only kinda serious gripe is to do with time compession, something in another part of the map can slow your time compression down,if you have to travel a thousand miles back to base gunfire from 500miles away can slow your game down meaning the journey home can take a lot longer than you may have expected.

I "Never" use Time compression, still running SH2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

SH2 will run out of the box on XP, AS long as u use compatible rollback for win9x, or if u dont like swaping shells, just install the 1.1 patch. ( Most mods, if not all, require u run SH2, with 1.1 build interlop patch ) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Your way better off spending your $$$ on a decent bottle of wine or a case of ale! Save yourself hours of frustration discovering all the %@!# ups that many of us dealt with (Mostly, an AI with severe mental challenges...............Mostly.). If you want to play a great subsim, buy SH1 Commanders edition on ebay for a few bucks. You can find instructions in the forums for getting it to run on Windows XP. About the time you feel you've mastered it and your still craving a visually stunning game with fresh hope, SH3 should be on the market. Best of luck, B http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gif
