View Full Version : X800XT PE v Geforce 6800 Ultra

Okay I would assume this topic has been discussed before but being a lazy sod I can't be arsed to look for it.

So I'm asking this question. If money is not a consideration which graphics card you go for Geforce 6800 ultra or the X800XT PE.

I play alot of IL2 and games like Counter Strike Source, Far Cry and the upcomign Rome Total War. A mix of Opengl and Direct3d flavoured games. I wish to use linux as well so that favours OpenGL. But I can't for the life of me decide. Can anyone give us a rough idea of there performance in this game with a P4 3.2 or AMD 64 3400 with a gig or ram.

Thxs for help.

A thread directly on this topic: here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=850000807)

And a list of several that are roughly on this topic: here (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=srch&s=400102&result_detail=3&x_as=&findw=x800xt&f=23110283&sis=&dt=10days-ago&author_name=&sort_order=2&action=simplesearch&search=Search)

The advanced search function on this forum is very good, it took me a whole 15 seconds to find those.

both are nice cards, i would say go with the one that will save you some cash.

Will either of these cards run IL2 at 1600x1200 with full aa and af.

That will depend to some extent on the rest of your system. Flight sims are very demanding on CPU, memory, sound card etc., video performance in flight sims is dependant on more than just your vid card.

I have a AMD 64 3400 overclocked to 2.4Ghz and some OCZ EB at 440mhz with good timings. I heard this game is limited by the cpu. I know everyones system is different.....but what would you reckon?

For a full estimate of your system post your dxdiag report in the community help forum. The experts there will let you know likely game performance levels and also point out any driver or system setup optimisations that might help.

If you play IL-2FB/AEP with Perfect (Maxed out grafix settings) @ 1600*1200 with 8x AA (Nvidia) and 16x AF you can play it but i don't think it will be fun...

i can get an average of 7FPS while watching a =track= i recorded (i was NOT gaming), there are only 7 planes fighting each other (including mine), no ground objects (on the map) and no citys in sight.

that are my specs:
Abit A-7N Rev2.0
AMD AthlonXP 2500+@3200+
1GiG Infineon PC2700 DDR-RAM (Dual-Chanel)
ATI Radeon 9800 @380[Core]/310[Mem]

so even assuming that you can get 5times that FPS (since GfX-Cards made a real step forward and your CPU is verry good)

you will have 35FPS AVERAGE!
with only a few planes involved...

with lower resolution 60+ in average is doable.

With the Nvidia, no. The ATI, yes. The Nvidia card takes too much of a hit once you start cranking up AA/Anis.

although you can call me an ATI fanboy i have to disagree, the new generation Nvidia cards (6800)
perform just as good with full AA/aniso compared to its ATI counter part (X800)

If you want ot use linux.. forget ATI cards.. they driver support in linux is a joke, missing features, very slow and unreliable! NV drivers are almost same as in windows.

So for linux boxes.. only one choice.

If brute force does not solve your problem... you are not using enough!

With the system below I run 1600x1200x32 4XAA, 4XAF perfect terrain Black Death track at 44FPS average. I notice some slowdown over large cities like Berlin due to the terrain complexity. On the other hand, Pacific Fighters will use Shader 3 technology which ATI doesn't support and which makes water really look good so Nvidia would have the advantage there.

Actually I've tested about 8 different 6800 cards and the scaling in AA and IQ are not as good as the ATI cards.

Nvidia has come a long way,don't get me wrong, but has not equaled it yet. 4X's AA on a Nvdia card = roughly 2X's AA on the ATI and FSAA does not work properly in any driver set to date with the 6800 series that I have seen as recently as last week. Also as resolutions scale up the Nvidia cards scale down.

Well if you want the real nice SM3.0 water in Pacific Fighters then you do want the NVIDIA offering.

If you want to use Linux then hands down get the NVIDIA card and run from the ATI one.

The SM 3.0 issue is hypothetical until you can compare what the water looks like with both cards-I highly doubt that vertex shading on the water is going to look that much better on NV's vs3.0 than ati's vs2.0-but I'd suspend judgement on that issue and purchase the card that give you the best IQ and FPS-and that's the ATI solution-Hunter is empirical proof of that.

Any yes-for you Linux boys-NV is the only way to go-but that wasn't the quesion.

The graphs are kind of messy. They have 2 GT's listed and a 6800. I highly doubt the 6800 128 out scored the GT and the Ultra in AEP. The X600 XT is about equal with a 9600 Pro so that's a moot point.

The X800 Pro is a 12 pipe card vs 16 pipe card line up...not exactly an apples to apples comparison. The XT PE or XT Non PE should have been added to the test field to make a proper comparison.

Anyone know what driver version was used on the test on both card brands? I didn't see it listed but may have overlooked it.

Here are some of my results:

ExhibitA:
OS = XP Home SP2.
Chassis = Shuttle FN85.
PSU = 240W.
Cooling system = 150W I2L hybrid.
Motherboard = Shuttle socket 754.
Chipset = nVidia 150.
CPU = AMD64 3200+.
RAM = Two 512MD DIMMs Mushkin PC3200 222.
HDD = 200 GB Barracuda SATA 7200.
Optical = LG DVD RAM.
Sound = nVidia 150
VGA = Sapphire X800 Pro w/VPU@520MHz and VRAM@533MHz.
VGA cooling = stock/hybrid enhanced.
3Dmark2003v340 default score = 11153 3D marks.

Compared to the same system with a 6800 VGA, it scores exactly 11153 more 3D marks because:
- A 6800 will not fit inside the tiny Shuttle chassis.
- If it did, it would blow up the PSU.
These facts remain the same, no matter what OS you choose to install.

However, we can compare the results to ExhibitB:
OS = XP Pro SP1.
Chassis = YCC F1 full tower aluminium server.
PSU = 550W Enermax Noisetaker.
Cooling system = 300W A2B hybrid.
Motherboard = Gigabyte K8 Triton socket 754.
Chipset = nVidia 150.
CPU = AMD 64 3200+.
RAM = Two 512MB DIMMs OCZ PC3200.
HDDs = Two 120GB Barracuda SATA 7200s in RAID0.
Optical = DVD RW and CD RW.
Sound = nVidia 150.
VGA = Asus V9999 GE (6800 GT) w/GPU @ 430MHz and VRAM@605MHz.
VGA cooling = fully controlled abmient liquid.
3DMark2003v340 default score = 11446 3D marks.

Since it is known that these VGAs perform best with very fast CPUs and/or high bandwidth system memory, it will be interesting to see how they perform using Intel 560 and AMD FX53/939 platforms.

nVidia also has working 6800 drivers for XP64 and I expect ATI will soon follow suit for the X800s. I will leave the open source experiments to those who enjoy such things.

For the record, with CCC maxed and all IL-2 VGA setting nailed to the ceiling, my Shuttle performs thusly:
- Clear as glass @ 1024 X 768 X 32 (my favorite setting with my 22" monitor).
- Acceptably smooth @ 1600 X 1200 X 32.
