View Full Version : Progressive Weather

A lot of threads these days are asking questions like, "What would you like to see in future combat flight sims?" Well, one little detail I'd love to see is progressive weather. Imagine taking off on a clear autumn morning. By the time you're done with your DP and it's time to turn back towards that platter of bacon and toast the mess orderly serves you every morning, you realise that those clouds that had seemed kilometers away when you had left have now started pouring rain down on your airstrip! You struggle with the control column and desperately kick the rudder into one side of the cockpit as strong winds buffet your fragile Bf109, threatening to tip it over just as solid ground is a mere ten meters below you. You push the control column into the far end of the 'pit' and cut the engine as your plane's wheels scrape against the ground and you bump over the sticky wet mud strip to a safe landing. You jump out of your still warm plane into the cold bitter rain and dash towards the waiting mug of hot coffee!

Oleg, would it be possible for you to make the weather conditions scriptable with smooth transitions between diferent weather conditions? Could you make it so that on the larger mapss (say Leningrad), we actually have different weather at different places? Thanks

Guys, if you all think this is a good idea, post here so that it catches Mr Oleg's eye.

Ladies & gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. Thankyou for choosing to fly Mandarin Airlines. Those passengers sitting on the left-hand side of the aeroplane please make yourselves comfortable. Those sitting on the right... please look to your left!

Sure, we have it in CFS3 and it would be great to see in a future Maddox Games sim.

As Viking said.. CFS3 has it, why not IL-2 !?

I think it would ge great to see this change in weather, even on winter.. when you takeoff on a clear sky and the region you must recon has a snow storm.

Hope it's feasable... If CFS3 did it, it is.

What they say... Weather does change. Normally, at least. When I look out the window now I see a seemingly infinite stratus cover at a few hundred feet, and it doesn't look like it's going anywhere anytime soon. Well, normally it does change /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Bump

I am not sure about modeling in the hot coffee though... And my wife would kill me if I marked up her rug with sticky virtual mud! - ever try cleaning that from a carpet??? LOL

Dynamic weather is a must if 1C ever intends to do a pacific sim. Might as well use FB to the test it on and to work the bugs out.

Good point there about the Pacific sim. It applies to a Med/N. Africa sim as well, since I'd love to try to fly through a simoom (sandstorm). Anyway, does anyone know if Oleg still reads stuff here, I haven't seen a single post by him in quite a while.

Not only changing weather, but different weather in different areas. Not stupidly and inconsistently different, but realistic variations, for example, a sunny day with scattered cloud in most areas, but perhaps a band of heavier cloud with showers and even thunderstorms.

The mist in valleys and on the coast around sunrise is a great feature. It would be nice if there could be some more variations in the weather, as well as the ability to chose from a wider variety of cloud and weather conditions.

Yup. Allow these different weathers to move over the terrain and you're in for a very near real experience.
For example you take off in nice weather, see some mean looking towering clouds a bit away. Stay out for 40 mins and come back to find your base in a thundershower.

well already you can feel wind buffeting your plane - especially with a FFB stick.

flying through clouds thunderstorms it get s pretty rough already.

clouds that move and weather that changes would be intersting though.

Absolutly Awsome Idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Progressive weather now thats somthing I'd like to see as well, add to that refuling so when you get lost in a storm you can land refule and find your way home /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

Think of the possiblilities. You take off in Yak~3 under a ~big~ towering cumulus cloud reaching from 500m to 8000m altitude, fly 50km to front, shoot down /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif 94 (not 100) Fb109K, but in your sweaty dogfight you lose sense of direction and you can't see your compass. But that ~big~ cloud is still over your field and you can still see it 50km away so you fly back and land and its now heavy rain right over the field. So its hard to land and your Yak doesn't have much fuel so you might have to find another nearby airfield where its not raining.

Hey,
About the BoB, Oleg says he'll have a completely new weather model!! I hope he's thinking in terms of this thread!

DBuff, this is off-topic, but do you have trouble aiming with your FFB stick? I loved my old MS FFB gameport, but I couldn't hit a thing. Buffetting before stalls, and trim feedback were really nice though. I think I flew better with it, but I couldn't fight with it. And, by the way, do use ruder pedals with it?
