So what is going to be better in the new version to make it worth getting over FS2002? Is it a monster upgrade over the last one?

Clouds. And a bit of terrain.

But mostly it's a weather upgrade. They say it will be quite something. I probably won't buy it because they screwed me on CFS3. $80 down the drain. Couldn't trade it away so I gave it away.

I have FS2002 though and it's pretty damn good.

I have always liked the FS series just to put around in whatever aircraft you want. All the free aircraft you can find makes it well worth it. Any word on backwards compatability of old FS2002 aircraft?

I've been lurking around in a few FS2k4 forums, and the idea I've gotten is that if the plane was modeled in gmax, and follows the SDK rules, they should work, with only a few requireing mods.

I don't know a huge amount about it, though, so don't quote me. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm pretty sure FS2002 aircraft should work with FS2004 because from a lot of my reading there are people developing 3rd party add on aircraft that work with both sims, so they must be compatible. I have FS2002, it's fun for some strange reason even though there's nothing to do but fly. Half the fun is in downloading new aircraft and flying those around though, like it's been said. I won't get this one, maybe the next one but we'll see how much more they add.

Seems like the graphics engine hasn't changed significantly then. I'll have to check out some more screenies.

According to Microsoft, here are the specs:
Windows 98/ME, 2000, XP;
450 MHz CPU; Windows 98/Me
- 64 MB RAM, Windows 2000/ XP - 128 MB RAM;
1.8 GB HD Space;
8 MB Video Card;
Direct X9 or better

Here's what I would recommend:
P3 900 or greater
256 MB RAM
64 MB of Video RAM (Geforce or above)

If it's M$ FS2004, i wouldn't bother getting it. It's the same thing as FS2002 except a few weather and ATC enhancements.
FS2K2 is a good "Sim" for just flying around and interacting with atc, like real pilots and the models looks fantastic as well as the cockpits and all the user add-ons........BUT!! You cant do anything else in it,.....damage modeling is non-existent, when u crash the game just resets itself back to the runway that u took off from whether it be 500 or 5 miles away. It just gets old, fast. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

If MS ever made a modern combat flight sim, i will be 1st in line to buy it!..They made too many CFS series if ya ask me, and now with the FS2004 is just a confirmation of what they are doing. Just releasing a oversized "patch" for FS2002, and charging seperately for it.

my 2 cents worth /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

There are weather and terrain differences in the two, but there are also addon planes in 2k4 like "The Spirit of St. Louis".

This was a JOYSTICK alert!!! LOL..../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif ... I am in no way touting the virtues of FS2004... FB is THE sim for me...but JOYSTICKS will be coming down in price for a bit in the near future...in fact i saw a MSFFB2 in Best Buy for $49..with no rebate today... I am getting my spare this weekend since they are going to stop making them.
