Interesting question about skinning ships, I don't see the need for carriers though - there were such a limited number of them in the war. Maybe other types of ships?

If 117 carriers, of different classes by the U.S. alone, limited, then I guess you don't need carriers. But, since they played a fairly important role in the Pac, carriers are more important than the battleship.

U.S.
33 fleet carriers. The rest escort or training.
British
23 Fleet. Several classes of smaller carriers.
Japanese
23 carriers all told.

Many carriers went through a significant evolution in their markings through the war, sometimes 3 or 4 different schemes. It'd probably be a nice option to be able to skin them like planes...

Even if we were not able to skin them ourselves, which is very likely, I hope that the PF-team will include multiple schemes fitting the period.

IJN CV decks looked funky, especially the mid/late war camo decks (as witnessed in the famous damage Zuikaku pics).

I also love the candy striped rear deck markings.

Bottomline, a chronological change in ship schemes would be great eye candy (and skinning is not a real "drain on resources".

The CV had replaced the BB completely in the PTO as the mainstay of the fleet. The BB had become not much more than a support ship, although the IJN still kept hoping for a big naval battle where the BBs could slug it out in one decisive confrontation (a kind of Tsu-Shima syndrome).

Even the smaller carriers (CVE) had an important role to play in covering amphibious ops etc during the island hopping campaign.

I advice you to do some reading before continuing this line of thought.

The importance of skinning is something else though, and imho irrelivant to this particular argument.

LOL, wasn't saying carriers weren't important to the pacific war, though I can see I worded that badly. My thought was that the game could inlcude 'em all without users having to mod them.

PlaneEater's comment though is a new wrinkle, so if they can make them skinnable I'm all for it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
