A spit L.F. is designed for Low altitude performance, and a Spit H.F. is designed for high altitude performance.

Low altitude fighter, High Altitude fighter, IIRC.

diff supercharger settings
also LF tended to have clipped wings but type of wing has nothing todo with fighter designation http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
