View Full Version : Why do we love the brothers?

Okay, I would have been incredibly excited regardless of the plot for Revelation. However, when I realized that Sirrus and Achenar would be returning, I jumped for joy in my dorm saying "holy ****" for 10 minutes (thank goodness my roommate wasn't around)! I have a feeling--but please correct me if I'm wrong!--that others had a somewhat similar reaction to the news.

The question is why--WHY do I love these two vicious monsters so much? If others could tell me their reasons why they can't wait to see the two brothers cause more mayhem, I could discover my own answer to the question...

I don't love the brothers. In fact, I profoundly dislike them. As "people," I mean. They're good characters. I just wouldn't leap up and down and say "Ooo goody, it's Sirrus and Achenar, I missed them!" or anything like that. They're baaaaaad, and I think they got what was coming to them. After all they did, the people they hurt, I just can't work up any warm, fuzzy feelings for them. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I had a very similar reaction to yours when I saw the trailer, though. Why? Well, for me, partly because the trailer was so creepy and atmospheric, so I kept thinking, "Oh, this is cool!" as it was playing.

Speaking solely in terms of the brothers, though, I'm excited about this plotline because I've always thought there were some unanswered questions about what happened to them and about their relationship to Atrus, and I'm think the new game will address that. I'm also very interested to see how Ubi pulls this off without contradictions.

So yes, I'm excited to see how this all turns out with the plotline, even though I don't really like the brothers. I know some do like them, though, and I'm interested in hearing what they have to say. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Alright, I didn't really elucidate very well. Of course I don't like them as people; they scare the living daylights out of me. That's probably why I'm excited about their return--I love video games, but no game villain has ever given me the heebie-jeebies like the brothers. I like a good scare now and then...

I don't "like" the brothers as "Oh goodie, I wanna be just like them". I like them as villians. They were the ones who put so much mystery into Myst.

I'm with Anna on this ... I feel there where many unanswered questions surrounding the "removal" of the brothers ... and know that there have been many discussions ... and a few debates ... as to whether they were really killed or just sealed away in their respective books.

I hope that these answers will finally be answered and put to rest. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Maxine, I was trying to be subtle. "Ixnay" is pig latin for Nix, or No, or Not, or just plain old "get rid of" or "let's not bring up".

Both these actors look like they'll surpass Robyn & Rand in character...(which is what Robyn & Rand hope for.) They look extremely vicious. I can only hope that the toys they leave behind equal or surpass Mysts' toys.

That's one aspect of Myst that I loved....the evil creativity of the brothers. Mind numbing.

Would it be too cool if we actually get to go back to a previously explored world from Myst in Revelation? Just for a small part of the story? It would be like "Whoa! Deja vu!" And that would be totally thrilling seeing how real it looked in 360 rotation! I'm thinking Channelwood.

Hehe...

I have to say, while I really do find the behaviors and actions of the brothers to be despicable, I do get a kick out of their quirked personalities in Myst... the warped jokes when they trap you stand out considerably as some of the best lines you'll never hear http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. Sirrus especially has long been my "favorite" brother (I've actually been told on occasion that I do a pretty good impression of him... and I might actually be able to slick my hair back better now that I've grown it out some http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif). But do I actually *like* him? No, not really. He's a spoiled, rotten, conniving instigator who's twice as slick as a used car salesman. He's horrible, but he makes a fascinating character, especially when placed in contrast to Atrus and Catherine's moral integrity.

I guess a part of me wants to see the brothers again because I want to see more of their warped sense of humor - I'm a weird person, I won't deny that. But I also want to see them again because, Yeesha aside, they're the only characters in the family that we don't really know much of anything about. Aitrus, Anna, Gehn, Atrus, and Catherine have all been fleshed out very well, and Yeesha's being covered, however subtly, by Uru's story, which leaves us with this huge 30 year gap of "history" that's been sitting un-touched for nigh on 12 years now. A very large part of me is incredibly intent on finding out what went on in those years to turn the two brothers into what we saw through the Linking Books in Myst ("Through the Linking Books"... wow, there's a soap opera if ever I heard one... "like pages burning in a fireplace, these are the days of our lives..." *shudder*)

*ahem* toe-pick...

I think the biggest thing, for me, is consistency in style between Rand.Robyn and the two new actors... especially for Sirrus. Achenar was unhinged enough that I think his new actor will have an easier time of it, but Sirrus... man, that guy's a piece of work, even as portrayed by Robyn's untrained acting skills.

I have a feeling network news would LOVE Sirrus and Achenar http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

As a mum, I was really distraught at the end of Myst when Atrus burned his link to the boys... no matter how horrible they were, I kept thinking "He's their DAD. Somehow, they were brought up completely wrong... he must not have realized it, being so busy..." etc. I always felt that Atrus and Catherine blamed themselves enormously, because I know I would.

I wonder if finally I will get to see the agony Atrus and Catherine went through as parents? I know the boys are adults but ... I guess I just think of everyone as somebody's baby, no matter how old they are... even murderers. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

In honor of what so far seems to be my "Annacat Making Stupid and Pointless Posts Day," and in light of the current discussion, I would like to dedicate the following song to Sirrus and Achenar, particularly the last line...

"Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me
We pillage, we plunder we rifle and loot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me
We extort, we pilfer we filch and sack
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
Maraud and embezzle and even high-jack
Drink up me hearties yo ho
Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me
We kindle and char inflame and ignite
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We burn up the city we're really a fright
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
We're rascals, scoundrels villains, and knaves
Drink up me hearties yo ho
We're devils and black sheep - really bad eggs
Drink up me hearties yo ho
Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a pirate's life for me
We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads
Drink up me hearties, yo ho
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads
Drink up me hearties, yo ho..."

Sorry, I couldn't resist http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I don't mean to make light of anyone's opinion, it just fit so well... *dodges flying veggies*

Oh, stop! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I bet you anything Atrus felt just as much love for and regret about Sirrus and Achenar as Catherine did; that's hardly a "girl thing."

Seriously, I can see the point about them still being someone's child. Personally, it's hard for me to relate, since I'm not a parent, but I can see it. Your child is your child, no matter what they do, and if they do bad things there's a lot of guilt and sadness attached, but still love.

Woo hoo, my first post on this forum!

But seriously -- I am really looking forward to Myst IV. The story of Sirrus and Achenar left SO much untold, although it fit into the storytelling style of the original Myst. Our discoveries in Myst told us a good deal about the nature of the sons, but it was obvious we were only scratching the surface, and that there was a whole lot of evil goin' on. Saavedro's story in Exile revealed a good deal more, but it looks like Revelation will blow the lid off the story once and for all.

I think I have it: The reason we are so glad to see more of Sirrus and Achenar: They're different than any other duo of fictional characters we know of (at least, that I know of :P ). Our human minds are very adapted to the idea of good being contrasted against evil. Very rarely do we see such great contrast in two evil people. Both are equally sickening: Sirrus with his greed, Achenar with his bloodlust. They even disgust each other, though their own problems seem perfectly normal to them. that's very very rare in our society. Even so, they can work together against good if they want to.

And yet, both are very much alike and have the same root problem. Both of them are cruel bullies suffering from a massive inferiority complex. They probably felt that they could not live up to the standards of their parents and Ti'ana (who are all very extraordinary people), so they fed their egos by bullying the people in Atrus's Ages.

They demanded respect they did not deserve because they decided that they were the sons of a "god" who created universes, and they became vicious when they did not get that respect. (Look at what they did to Saavedro because he treated them like boys instead of men who were his superiors.) But, at some level, they KNEW they weren't worthy of respect, so they came to hate their father for setting the example they couldn't follow.

Now the question is "can they be cured?" (The story takes place years before Freud was even born, so Atrus could hardly take them in for therapy! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) Did 20 years of solitary confinement in prison Ages help the mental state of either one of them, or did it just twist them more? I can't wait to find out!

I HATE Achenar. He's ugly, has a big beard, is brutal and greedy. A real villain, in that Entragian style.

The brothers to me mean more than just villians. They are another battle of the human mind. Sirrus representing the logical and methodical side and Achenar being the animal or emotional side. These aspects are alive in all of us and are at constant war. So to see them battle out of your mind is a treat.

I think it's interesting, but obviously kha'tie thought otherwise http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But seriously, Sirrus and Achenar are interested because they speak to the disfunction in all of us - Achenar to our internal, brutal self; and Sirrus to the more stylish, suave conqueror.

We like them because they are us.

Right, that's enough philosophy for today. Who wants a game of tiddlywinks?
