...my level of proficiency hit the floor once again.

A year and a half of IL-2 had me getting complacent. Loaded up FB (v1.0) two days ago, and have been honing skills on all the old and new a/c.

All of today's session involved me, with mounting frustration, trying to kill anything in a 109F2, F4, G2, G6, K4. Damned if i only succeeded once, (and that was with the F2 against two veteran LaGGs - had it really come to this?).

Flying Yak-1/9 or La5 seems to be less of a problem, but i still get nailed a lot.

Anyone any general luftwaffe tactical hints? I try coming in from about 1000m+ enemy height but my wingman always seems to die needlessly by turning instead of zooming. Then the Yak/La is gaining angles on my F2/F4/G2. A two on one sees me bid a hasty retreat to score an emphatic zero on QMB.

Add to that the AI can actually shoot now!

And i love it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif !

I don't mean to shamelessly bump my own thread, but can anyone help? Any tactics for sure success in the QMB with luftwaffe?

Thanks again

i think the basic tactic with any aircraft is to suprise your opponent. dont get into a "merry-go-round" situation where enemy aircraft are all around you. get above the fray and do high speed dives and cut through enemy formations life a knife. its the much taunted "boom and zoom" tactic. "situational awarness" is the key

If you're flying with AI, use the wingman commands A LOT. Use Cover me and Rejoin to get him to "not fly stupid" and to more closely follow your B&Z moves.

It's hard to get used to using those commands in the heat of combat, but sometimes it's better than just watching your wingman fly like a doofus.

I flew a Instant Action once where I was trying to clear my wingman, but he kept flying AWAY from me and I couldn't gain on him (and his persuer), I commanded him to "rejoin" and he made a nice turn back, which I used to set up a nice pursuit path on the plane behind him. After I cleared him, I typed in "Attack fighters" and he re-engaged to help me blast the enemy.

Try it, it works...sometimes.

i never pay attention to my wingman.
they are very inconsistant. usually their useless.
if you want to know where the enemy is, turn on the map and guide yourself to the action.

You might also consider installing the recent patch. That will change a lot of things, including deadly accurate head-on passes from lower level AI, sniper gunners and lots of other improvements. AI even stall now after the patch.

Thanks all for the advice, especially about the wingman rejoin - now that i think about it it's the obvious way to do some drag and bag maneouvre. Up to now I have just made myself the obvious target and got my wingman with his sniper skills to clear my tail.

I must say that so far the sniper AI hasn't been too much of an issue, but at the point when i'm tearing my hair out (probably mid way through a hard fought campaign) I might resort to v1.1. Happy with 1.0 at the moment.

Thanks again

Go anywhere near the back of a bomber with a tail gunner in 1.0 and you will learn all about sniper AI. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif
