Today I flew my best sorte ever. Very happy about this so I thought I would share this and at the same time promote flying closed cockpit. Yes it can be done and certainly is worth the effort and practice.

On my first sorte I got three kills on the virtualpilots_1 server in my P-40E. Of course this is a closed cockpit server. The P-40 has excellent vision from the pilots perspective. This enabled me to scan around my aircraft fairly well. Also at times it was necessary to drop a wing either left or right to scan below.

I had no trouble picking out distant targets even at 1280 x 960 resolution. With limited icons this becomes important. Anisotropic filtering helps here as dots appear brighter for me while using this feature.

I must say everything went right. I flew at a good altitude to either have a good advantage or be able to evade if jumped. I downed 3 Me-109's about midway from the Soviet base to Finland. All within 5 minutes.

After expending all my ammo on my last kill I was able to dtermine my position on the map via landmarks and plan a heading that returned me safely to base.

Upon arrival over base a perfect three point landing completed a very memorable sorte for me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yesterday, things were certanly different as I was shot down several times and got 0 kills. Oh well, you win some you lose some http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

IMO, Cockpit on and no externals are the only way to fly. Anything less is cheesy and boring.

Agreed...I actually consider "externals on" to be cheating.

Is there a way to have externals be available only if you have bailed out or crashed?

It would be cool to still have the ability to watch other dogfights in progress.. that, and the fun-factor of the fly-by cam http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif are the only two reason I like the externals.

Thanks, but I have been playing on closed cockpit servers for a long time. I just have never been able to pull off three kills in one sorte. I more often than not get my butt smoked http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I agree. I usually only play in cockpit on, and no externals. However it is tough to find those that also fly the G.50 or CR.42. I flew a few days ago in a server with externals and it was so easy. No way to be surprised. A TA 152 was closing on my six and with no externals, I probably would have been toast, but I waited till just the right time to roll away and he overshot and I was able to damage him where he flew off. this in a G.50. He tried again in a lightning and same thing. Just climbed away. I wonder why so many find the externals so interesting. If they want to see their skins, just save a trak.

Yeah it would be nice to have that as a selectable option.
The only downside would be spying capabilities especially with teams on Comms.
Then again it could be an option, kind of a meet half way thing.

When I narrowed my selection for tattoos down to two I went with the larger colored one just so I could get an extra couple minutes of pain.
