NoSubTitles=1 is great but I don't want to turn all the messages OFF. I would like to keep some messages ON like "Vector to home base" and "Enemy at 3 o'clock". How do I do that?
I found the file hud_msg.properties but it seems that sound files are attached to the text and I don't want to mess that up. Is there a solution to my problem?

If no, is there a way to decrease the size of the messages?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure it's all subtitles or nothing. And I know of no way to change the font size either.

For clarity, the problem is that you have Russian or German sound files playing without subtitles and can't understand the messages, and you would like to understand some of the more important ones?

Subtitles is an 'all or nothing' setting. The alternative is to replace your sound files with ones that you can understand.

The lazy way is to replace an entire folder. So you would delete the speech/RU folder, copy the US folder and rename it 'RU'. Then everytime you fly Russian you will hear English language. You could do that for every nationality you fly as and hear them all speaking English.
A better option than using the stock American files to replace the Russian/German ones is to download Extreme_One's BoB campaign and use his excellent RAF/Allied voicepack.

The non-lazy option is to go through each actor in the RU folder and replace only the sound files that you want to hear in English with the American/RAF equivelent. If you only want to hear 15-20 important messages, this isn't a huge task; the name of the file reflects the spoken phrase, so it is easy to find the ones you need.

Just a warning:
The other workaround you might be considering is to delete the subtitle text for most of the messages, leaving the text for the ones you want, and then enabling subtitles in the conf.ini.
This won't work. When there is no text specified, FB displays '---' in the HUD, which soon becomes very annoying.

In IL-2 times, I opened the folder and listened, practised every words in German, Russian, Not to use subtitles and hear in native language.
But after FB+AEP, Hungarian, Slovakian, French, and Finnish etc.. I gave up. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif They all use English now.

If you're like I am, you want no word overlays on the screen at all. The essential instruments in the cockpit provide the flight info needed.

But most of us need translations when flying for another virtual "country," one that doesn't use a language we're familiar with.

So several months ago someone on the forum explained how open the "Samples" folder and switch the dialogue files to your native language. Which means my German, Russian, and other nationality pilots all speak with an American twang and drawl. On the other hand, I love NSTELA's GB voice pack (and background chatter), and use them every time I step into a British plane. I even thought about using this voice pack for German planes...but not for long.

I think there are some English with Russian/German accent files somewhere, but don't remember where. I rather use the muted radio chatter in german, russian, or japanese playing as in-flight music file. It really adds to the feeling of being there.

Away from sound files and back to the original poster who's question was about text messages:

Back up your hud_msg.properties. Then delete all the messages you don't want to read. Dont delete the complete lines, but only the text that is displayed on the screen, i.e. the words that follow the void. (I didn't remove the voids in my test!)

If the original line was:

Attention_Stay_in_formation_Stand_by_for_my_orders Stand by for my orders.

The new line should be:

Attention_Stay_in_formation_Stand_by_for_my_orders

You will still hear all the spoken messages, but see on your screen only the lines you left in the file.

Thanks a lot Plumps, I was afraid to mess up the sound files but your solution turned out to be the right one. Everything works perfect!
