S!
My current system of amd 2000 (1.67ghz) with 512 ddram is going to be getting a upgrade in video card. I currently have the Geforce mmx 440 64 mb card and want to get the XFX Geforce fx 5700le with 256 mb. I am getting this card for around 120 bucks after rebate. My question is simply is this a good video card or is there something better around this price range. My current card is a nivida and really like this brand, but will switch if there is something better.

Thanks
Fwdreamer.

Be prepared - you'll get the Nvidia fanboys ****ging of Radeon and the ATI fanboys ****ging-off NVidia.

I don't think there is a definitive answer...

Good luck!

well my friend just purchased one of these careds and i must say this isnt Nvidias best card for sure. it auto detects most of his games at the lowest settings. you'd think that 256mb would smoke, but nosir. you're better off going with either the ultra 5900 or maybe the lower cards like ti4800 128mb, which is what i have with the latest 53.03 Forceware drivers installed, its been a great card for me.

What about a 5900 XT, just to stay within price limits..?

ati 9500pro will blow most of nvidias cards away. You can pick them up used for about $100-125. I just got one for my friend: http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?p=2761728#post2761728

Of course this is an opengl game which nivida sometimes does better at... Any body here gotta a comment on that? I know this game flys on my 9700pro at like 60+fps. I got the hardware shaders disabled though, with them ill get about 30-40fps.

Ok thanks so far on this matter, but i guess i am getting a bit confused. I guess i need more clarification on what i should look for in a vid card. How much improvement will i see in my game play when i go from 64mb to 128mb? I do not need absolute perfect graphics, just a way to cut down on stutters and freeze ups. If i get a 256 mb video card will that make more of a difference in terms of fps then a 128? This is my main concern is the stutters and freezes as my cpu loads a frame.
So for example when i fire all of my guns at once my whole screen stops for a second and i can see my cpu running like mad to render this. Will getting the 128 or 256 mb vid card hel eliminate this. I do have cable modem to go along with this.

Thanks

There is WAY more involved than simply the amount of video ram you have. There's the speed of the ram, speed of the GPU, # of pipelines, what resolution you run, etc,...

I have a friend who has a 9800 pro 128 that just continues to crank out impressive frames in FB at native resolutions of 1024x768x32 bit.

This is SOOOoo subjective. Yes a 5700 256 will run better than that 440 mx.

There are likely better choices though. (Like more system ram?) Adding more system ram may be the better choice for now as the prices of video cards will be coming down in a month or so...guaranteed.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Starting next week Best Buy will have Radeon 9800 Pros going for $199... $249 full price... If I were you I would go that route. If you are going to get an Nvidia go for at least a 5700 Ultra.

Why wait? CompUSA is selling 9800 Pros for $199 right now! (after rebate).

And supposedly, there's a patch out there on the web that will allow you to open up the remaining 4 pipelines to give you a total of 12 (as opposed to the Nvidia's 4).
