When I fly the K4, the radiator is open by default...shall i close it for maximum E efficiency?

I'm not a 109 expert but I'd say find a compromise, maybe 2 or 4.

definatly all the 109s start off with radiators open except the Emils. Close them for your climb and you get there alot quicker with less trottle then cool off a bit. The drag is huge on 109s with rads even open on 2 4

Actually, the default is closed/auto and I've noticed no difference in top speed if I leave it on this setting or close it.

i may be just making this up, but with the radiator open, or on auto, you seem to get oil on your windshield much more easily, and also your engine seems to burn much more easily. i don't have anything to back this up, but from shooting guys down who keep their rad.'s open i've just observed these. again i may just be making it up.

Actually, the default is closed/auto and I've noticed no difference in top speed if I leave it on this setting or close it.

At top speed with MW50, an open radiator causes 50km/h slowdown. It makes a considerable difference in straight line top speed, and is best to be kept closed if possible.

On the other hand, during climbing, there is little to no speed penalty for an open radiator. The faster you are going, the larger the amount of drag caused.

RGR What Fennec said.

On takeoff and climbout I leave it on auto - climbing at slow speeds (240-270 kph depending on type) has little effect due to radiator drag.

When crusing I usually set it to 2 (if engine is cool then auto will close rads anyway) but don't exceed much more than 75% throttle.

When diving for a BnZ attack I close them fully, I don't open them again until I'm below 300Kph on the climb back up. When up high again you can cool off.

The rads do close on auto if you are at high speed (diving) with a reasonably cool engine /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
