I'm new here, take it easy on me.

I am on a satellite system and can't play online, but eventually the cable or telephone guys are going to get here and then I'll be online. In the meantime, I don't want to learn any bad habits.

Is it cheating to have the a/c icons turned on? Map icons? I suppose that's a provacative topic, I don't mean to stir the hornets nest, I just want to know if the online servers play with those. I've got all the cheats save those two turned off. Am I still a wussy?

most of us fly with all difficutly options turned ON.

which means, no plane icons, no map icons, no external views, no speedbar etc etc.. It is not cheating to use them, but most likely you wont be able to usr those option in most of our servers.

I wouldn't go as far to say "most people play with full switch". I bet its split down the middle for those that do and don't.

Yes, quite.

In fact, one of the most consistently packed and loved servers (Warclouds) has limited icons, speedbar and minimap path turned on.

I tend to favor the minimap setting as I feel it is a better appxroximation of a local pilot having working knowledge of the lands for navigational positioning that you or I just aren't going to have for lack of real-time experience in the area and for lack of numerous and differentiated landmarks to dead-reckon by. The limited icon setting makes up for lack of real-world mark-one eyeball resolution and depth perception for identification of enemy planes at closer ranges, and is therefore a welcome and realistic setting in my opinion. The speedbar does a few things. One, it makes up for some of the wonky compasses in the game that don't work properly. Two, it makes up for some of the lost "feeling" of flight and limited cockpit view.

But, the full-difficulty crowd and the "arcade" crowd will all have different opinions on what is more realistic, more difficult or appropriate for online play.

Bottom line is, go with whatever you feel is most fun and realistic to you. That is the correct group of settings to use, regardless of what anyone else tells you.

Hell, some people even suggest turning off spins/stalls so that you get a more realistic "mushy" feeling from the controls when you are close to stall. So, who knows.

Just have fun with it.

I'd also have to say its about down the middle. I fly both full switch and easier settings online depending on the mood. Just remember, icons are not a cheat if everyone gets to use them. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif You will just have to have different tactics than in a server without icons on.

this is an observation only from talking to people and playing .. i do not think anyone has ever surveyed this ----

online dogfight - ppl tend to easier settings
online coop - pp tend to full real or close
squad pilots - tend to harder settings
offline campaigns - varies a lot but often harder settings

Fly how you like... just dont use map icons and keep all the flight settings as realistic as possible.. meanong stalls spins etc... Flying without icons is what I prefer off line..... when online with the squad because we have different rigs and different skillsets and control interfaces we are more flexible however we are moving towards a locked pit with limited or no icons and padlock for those who are controller challenged. One thing I can say.. dont worry about what other people fly. Fly how you like. There are all kinds of servers on Hyperlobby for every kind of taste. We sometimes use unlimmited ammo in some of our target practice coops. It all depends....

It's possible to make things harder than real, aspect for aspect. Still you don't get
G-force, freezing cold or hot fumes inside. You don't get the real workload either.
OTOH you can't begin to see as in reality, or feel the stick, or have full stick
travel and can't trim realistically.

required equipment for all toggles set difficult is the best hardware and connection
you can get plus your own tape measure so you can report on the size of something if
the topic comes up. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif But mostly it's hardware and kill count to compensate.

As fars as Icons go. When I host a dawgfight map they are on, it is usally fast paced. With a bombing mission they are off. It gives the bombers a better chance to get to the target...........

As far as cockpit on(how most of us fly LOL) I just checked Hyper Lobby and UBI for servers with more than 6 flyers at 11.00PM CST...........

HL... 3 servers with cockpit on ...6 with out Cockpit off
UBI... 2 with cockpit on.... 4 with out cockpit off. So I would say most fly with Cockpit Off!

High Ground is not only more agreeable and salubrious, but more convenient from a military point of view; low ground is not only damp and unhealthy, but also disadvantageous for fighting.

I fly with externals on (cause I like the scenery) and the speed bar on (cause I can't read my gauges very well). I just started to fly with the icons off, and I'll say, my recognition has improved drastically. And I'm surprised at how quickly my shooting has adjusted.

But, sometimes I like to fly super easy settings. Like someone else said, it's dependant upon my mood. My advice is to fly whatever makes you happy, and if you want (especially for flying online) gradually increase your difficulty settings.

I wasn't about to start off on full-switch, but I worked my way up to it at my own pace.

Good luck and welcome aboard!

Its not cheating to have icons on....there are diferent distance options for icons. It also depends of the quality of your monitor and its size aswell as graphics card.
An easy way to decide visible range icon is to do the cartest. Look at cars at different ranges , for example on a parkinglot, and note the ranges where u see the type clearly. (yupp it was me who invented the test in the old days..he he). U will notice it might be unrealistic to turn icons off, depending on your system. Some servers like GreaterGreen and F16 have limited range friendly icons and no icons for the enemy. This was good for my rigg and there is no need to investigate all planes within real visual range, (my opinion) thanx to the icons.

As alway, this is "my" opinion...but well wort to give a thought. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

--------------------------------------------

While testing u might want to try the cockpitbar test too?. (yep, me again) Its easy. Examine how much u have to lean your head to one side to see past a "cockpit bar" in the car. U will end up close to 20 cm. Think about this when u fly planes with obstructed view and ...give realism a thought.

What i try to say is that realism is a very relative concept, its very much up to U.
While testing and flying...try to have fun....I do.

cheers

Ofthen the "realistic" servers use limited icons (on friendlies at close range) and speedbar.

Some things are needed to make up for deficiencies inherent in the hardware.

Limited icons due to planes disappearing at midrange even though you are looking
right at them from farther away.

Padlock for those without TrackIR trying to play along with those who have it.
Yes it is abusable. Play with people you can trust or at least everyone has the
same abilities, not just people with extra hardware. I won't get into joysticks,
pedals or better PC's and connects though.

Speedbar because in many planes critical instruments like the compass are blocked
from view you can't move to see around. Nor can you quickly look to guages and
back, there is no way to set a button for that.
