Pretty lighting effects and so on aside.
What are the best graphics settings to actually spot and track the enemy?
Too much eye candy like cockpit reflections makes it harder in my opinion.
What resolution and graphics detail levels?

Ahhhh...the low-res cheat.

The game is optimized for 1024x768 but many have noted the greater ease in spotting the baddies with lower resolutions (800x600 being the most common). Also, lower cloud details.

Personally, I crank my resolution and graphic details to the highest settings I can comfortably play. I have them all set to their highest possible setting except for "perfect" landscape.

I just set them to where I can play without stutter. 750 Duron GeForceMX2 64mb. Even with RivaTuner I'm always fudging for better frame rates. I guess I wouldn't know how to act to be able to play on perfect mode!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!

Well I have my settings at 1024 X 768 X 32 and Perfect. I use the sun glare and all of the eye candy I can turn on. I set my visibility to medium because in real life, unlimited visibility only happens in the movies. I also fly with the cockpit on and try to make the experience as real as I possibly can. It makes it more interresting to try and locate some obscure ground target while you have to avoid attacks from flying enemies at the same time.

Our server has cockpit on and 0.1 mp_dotrange so spotting the enemy is rather hard.
I am also new at the game and know some of the guys run lower graphics settings (even with clouds off), this puts those running higher res and more eye candy at a disadvantage.
How big is the disadvantage?

I play at 1600 X 1200 32 resolution & unfortunately, although the game looks much much better like this, it puts you at a huge disadvantage in spotting enemy aircraft. I mainly play on full real servers or servers with limited icons and so it is very apparent to me. I know from regular flying with my squadron that fellow section and flight pilots who use lower resolutions will see bogies anywhere up to 30 seconds before I can. That may not sound like much, but if your a decent pilot you'll know that can be the meaning between winning and losing. It's something I've been aware of for some time and one just have to accept that it's the price of having nice graphics. I can't say it's a cheat unless someone is doing it specifically to get an advantage, and you should know who you are; good luck sleeping straight in bed at night. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

Switched from an ati 9700 to 6800gt and I can spot planes much better!, even in high resolutions.
With my ATI planes often blurred away in the background/ground.

Also u can choose a plane with lower visibility = that will blend with the background better.

bf109 was a small plane compared to the hurricane but the hurricanes model blends better with the background and is almost invisible at "certain" distances and only may be detected by the tracers and if seen against the sky.

The hurricanemodel isnt smaller it just seems more transparent and lighter whereas the 109 is dark and solid.
So at close ranges the hurricane is harder to spot and can easier be lost by a tracker.

he he..... sometimes u can se a 109 chased by tracers but no plane...then u know its likely a Hurri. If u look carefully u can see the hurri but u will se the 109 clearly.

Just an observation. (And yes I like the hurri too).

Hmmm...Boltie...I wish I could swap my Lowres
cheat to the Highres cheat.

Since upgradign my graphics card and increasing my in-game settings I'm better at spotting targets in the air and on the ground. I did used to fly at 1024x768 16bit and I reckon the change to 32bit has helped a lot.
Also the use of anti aliasing & Aniosotropic filtering improves things.
