I' ve just read in this link, http://mitsubishi_zero.tripod.com/armament.htm, that some zero model 22 experimentally carried the type 5 cannon of 30mm instead of the traditional 20mm cannon. Can anyone confirms this info?

If it did it wasn't for very long! Sounds like a single test example if it occurred at all. The whole point of the Zero was that it was supremely LIGHT.

There was a nightfighter A6M5 with 2x Type99 Mk.2 cannon behind the pit firing upward @ an angle of 30‚?.

Yes, I known. But this 30mm zeros, even if in small numbers, are more ...'interesting', expecially against bomber.

speaking of light zero construction has anyone seen the movie the final countdown? ud think when those tomcats buzzed the zeros they would have fallen apart

I think that was a single 20mm cannon - adapted by the 302nd Kok at Atsugi in 1945 for use against B-29's. Unofficial I believe.

I think it was more than one aircraft, from "Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War" I quote-"A small number of A6M3s were tested operationally at Rabaul with wing-mounted experimental 30mm cannon".
Unfortunatly if it gets included ingame it will be over used like the Ki-84-Ic.
I have also seen a Ki-61 with 30mm wing cannon.

I didn't find stuff about the 30mm, but here a scan of the A6M5 with the Schr√¬§ge Musik. As someone above mentioned, there was "only" 1 Type99 gun mounted. I'm sure I do store a RL pic of that Zero layout but actually I don't refind that in my lib. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

Here the scan.

Judging by the position of the muzzle, I would say it would have been pretty much deafening to the pilot.

Yes, an experimental mod was made, but the wing could not cope with the recoil and the weight of the 30mm. ever wondered why is the cannon there?
because that point is the strongest in the whole aircrfat, it is where the gear is attached. those Japanese engineers were mad about weight saving!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

O, how I want to hold you,
To feel your breath
And hear your laughter in my ears.
To look into your eyes
And see myself in there.
Caress you with my lips.
To hold your hands in mine
And find the hidden smile in your dimple
That makes you irresistible
And stops the breathing in my chest.
To be with you when you are weeping,
To wipe away the tears and take away the sorrow.
To watch you while you are sleeping
Like there is no tomorrow.

And with a tender kiss to wake you up.

I hope the initial post and some of the replies aren'T meant to be a request for yet another axis fighter with heavy cannons? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
