Dear Ilya,

Would you consider modeling ship AAA gunners positions? It could be fun and may catch attention of non-simmers (who could become simmers) to PF.

Thought bubble:: As aircraft gunner, you are one of only a Few.

As ship gunner, you are one of hundreds of AI gunners--you can't tell if you shoot something down or some AI gunner.

Simming a lonely PT~Boat gunner would be cool, but I thought Oleg was working with people who are making a new PT~Boat sim.

Lexx,
If you shoot someone down, the program could tell you "Enemy Aircraft Destroyed". But from immersion perspective, it would be interesting to look through sailors' eyes.

Just a wild thought, manning a gunner postion could be a bonus for players who successfully landed on the carrier.

Of course, I would not turn down PT boat, fishers boats, or ground AAA positions as well.

I've been asking for mannable flak since the original IL-2, but it's just much more complex to do than it seems. It creates all sorts of problems with online code etc, and in the end it just ends up being too much effort for the payoff we'll get.

If this was a few days of work then I'd be all for it, but since we're actualy talking about weeks and weeks of programming, this is just an item on my wishlist I had to cross off in order to get the other ones http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

i don't think Oleg had BF1942 in mind when he made the game. i vote no, those resources could be used to find bugs.

Thanks, Ilya for your response.

Well, if we cannot operate flak, at least maybe you can give us "Gunner's view" option--does not have to be on-line if it's complicated.

Thrud, no one was talking about making FPS out of PF. Manning guns would be just another wrinkle to realism, and it seems Oleg will do just that in BOB.

Just try this guys. Create a mission in FMB. Put a TB-3 with 0 fuel on a runway with take-off waypoint, and block off one side of it completely with large hangars or something. Then set up a bunch of Stukas and FW-190s to attack varios small targets around the airfield.

See how much you can bear sitting there taking pot shots at faraway aircraft with your twin .303s before you have a very strong urge to stop wasting your time, jump into a real aircraft and have some real fun http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Even though I want this feature myself, I realize it's just a gimmick. Being a statiouary gunner fixed to a single point is not much fun, especially when your field of fire and view is blocked by a large superstructure as is the case with ship gunners. And the fact that most aircraft will not be attacking you directly but rather some points around you means you'll rarely if ever have a good shot at anything.

And seriously, before you reply and disagree with me, try the mission I suggested.

You are right, Ilya--lots of ideas sound better than when you actually try them.

But do not cross this one completely off your list. Maybe one day, after you release PF and sober up after celebrating the most successful sequel in the history of fligh simulators, you will get this feature done.

Thanks for your attention and good luck.

If it ever came to that I'd actually do driveable tanks and other vehicles before stationary flak. Man, toggling between the driver and gunner seats of an M16 is a major dream of mine http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ilya,
Does Il2's engine allow things like "drivable" vehicles and "sailable" boats?

Thanks for your work, Ilya. It must feel very rewarding to know that you made so many people enthusiastic about your project.
