S~ All,

I'd like to start this thread in the hopes of creating our own community driven readme and hands-on tutorial for setting up and running a dedicated server. I'll start if off with the things I have figured out or heard of so far and hopefully we can all contribute to make this the definitive thread until something formal is posted by the community. If you have links to relevant threads post them here as well. Understand that not every question, concern or issue will be covered in this initial post. I have not even come close to figuring out the whole package or addressing all of the issues at hand nor am I pretending to. There are many talented individuals and squads hard at work on this but I'd like to get the ball rolling in a manner of speaking.

<font color=999966>**I'd like to request that we keep this on topic and to the point --- No UBI bashing, negative comments, etc please. We all have our opinions on the subject but I would prefer to avoid them here, just keep to the in's and out's of the dedicated server and stick to business**</font>

<font color=999966>Overview:</font>
There are two ways the dedicated server can run. One is the default version that has a console window open when running and the other is a modified version where the game runs, but you do not see the console window. This second variation is the one that works with FBDaemon and must be manually created by editing some parts of the DS installation.
(from here on out, I'm going to abbreviate the dedicated server as DS to save some typing)

TIP:
If hosting on windows 2K or XP, the DS uses a process called il2server.exe which you can see in the task manager under the Processes tab. If for some reason you are not sure if the game is running, check the task manager for this process to verify. The other process which you
may see is called il2console.exe. More on this later.

<font color=999966>Installation:</font>
The DS file can be found at 3dgamers.com at:
http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/il2sturmovik2/il2fb_server1.11.exe.html

For starters, once you have the dedicated server downloaded, it extracts by default to:

C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB Dedicated Server

If you want to run multiple game sessions of the default DS, when you extract the files, add

a number or change the file path to something different each time:

C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB Dedicated Server2

C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB Dedicated Server3

C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB Dedicated Server4

DS runs missions/maps from the default location of C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB

Dedicated Server\Missions\Net\dogfight\ 3/1_Islands.mis

There is a file called server.cmd which is what executes the start up mission. To change what mission you want to load for starting, you must first copy the .mis and the .properties file into the \missions\net\dogfight folder, then edit the server.cmd with the path to the new mission (to edit the server.cmd, right click on it and select EDIT).

For example, we deleted all the included missions from the dogfight folder, created a new folder called 2 and copied over our startup mission of winterstalingrad45, then edited the server.cmd to look like this:

mission LOAD net/dogfight/2/01winterstalingrad45.mis BEGIN
f settings.cmd
f gc.cmd

Once the game is launched, server.cmd executes the mission to be loaded. (It also can do a heck of a lot of other things, more on that later as well)

<font color=999966>Hosting single or multiple games on the same computer:</font>

To host a single default session or multiple default sessions, create a shortcut to the exe:

GS_il2ServerLauncher.exe

This is the exe that launches the console version and after logon, you will see the DOS window scrolling by events from the game itself. This file is found in the IL2 FB Dedicated
Server folder itself.

In this case TX Squadron created 4 seperate server folders intended to run 4 game sessions.
We used the naming scheme above and created a shortcut to each folder called FB Server 1, 2, 3 and 4. We also created 4 shortcuts to the GS_il2ServerLauncher.exe and named them FBexe 1, 2, 3 and 4. For simplicities sake, I also put the shortcuts together so that it's easy to decide what goes with what. By doing this, as soon as anyone logs into the server, they see all 4 sessions ready to go and can just doubleclick, logon and then move to the next session, all right there on the desktop in plain view. (I'm a big believer in simplicity)

<font color=999966>Launching the game itself</font>
Once you click on the GS_il2ServerLauncher.exe a window pops up called IL2 Server Launcher.
By default the first time you see it, it's empty but definately needs information before it will run a game.

Where it says IP Address and Port, you can click the download info button and it will populate the UBI router info (gsrouter-mtl1.ubisoft.com and port 40005).

Username and Password are your regular UBI game lobby credentials you use to fly in UBI. If you don't have an UBI account, you will need to create one. Using your logon here does not prevent you from joining as a player in the regular UBI game service and you can use the same account to host multiple DS sessions and play online at the same time as well.

TIP:Use your UBI forum account, it's the same thing.

For example, I used TX-Zen 4 times for 4 sessions, then logged into UBI and flew on them as TX-Zen.

Once logged in, you will see two pop ups that say Login Successful and Request Finished. In the area called Groups, you will now see a group name called IL2:FB Dogfight. This is the UBI lobby area for FB that we all normally host on.

Before you hit Launch, give your session a unique name, assign the max players, session password if desired and the port number of the session. (32 is possible, if you use the RTS.dll from the regular game btw just copy and paste over top of the DS included RTS.dll...thanks to whomever posted that earlier, I apologize but I've lost the thread and the name of the poster)
This port number is important because if you do host multiple sessions on the same computer, each instance will need it's own port number in order to work properly. These settings are persistent, so once entered, they will remain until the next time you launch the game.
TIP:
The configuration information is stored in a file called Launcher.ini in the root of the installation folder, same place that you found GS_il2serverlauncher.exe.

Assuming that we are only running the default session of the DS here, you will see a DOS window appear and can watch events happening in the game. Closing this window kills the
session btw, so minimize rather than exit if you need to get it out of the way.

<font color=999966>Working with FBDaemon</font>
This definately more Sammie and BadBernie's area of expertise than mine, but I have gotten it to work (or at least it seemed to). If anything is not correct, it is due to a failing in my inteligence, powers of perception, upbringing, political views or something completely different than all of that and I apologize in advance.

FBD does not run well while the console is up, so a little editing must be done in order to make it work. The editing has two parts also...eliminating the console from appearing in Windows when the game runs and pointing the FBD exe to the location of the DS exe.

Step 1: Eliminating the console

In the root folder, there is a file called CONFS.INI. Look for this area:
[Console]
;IP=20000
IPS=

Remove the ; from the line called IP=2000 and add your own IP in IPS=. This prevents the console from automatically starting as well as allowing you to send console commands if needed. In theory you could add a remote machine's IP here and be able to admin the server from another computer entirely, assuming the IP can be reached and also assuming that you have the DS installed on the second machine. I have not tested the remote admin issue yet.

To send console commands, run the il2console.exe. A DOS window opens and you can send commands to the server through it, though you won't see any events from the game scrolling by. This process is called il2console.exe in the taskmanager but you will not see it unless
you manually run the exe. As far as I can see, you can safely close this window without ending the game session (which is using il2server.exe as mentioned above).

Step 2: Configuring FBD
By default FBD is installed into C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles\fbdaemon

In the file called fbdaemon.ini, you must rename the existing path of the IL2FB.exe and change it to the location of the il2server.exe.

For example, we edited our FBD ini file to look like this:

[FB info]
path=C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\IL2 FB Dedicated Server\il2server.exe

TIP:
Remember that if you are hosting multiple sessions you must point FBD to the path where each session is launched from. I have not tested this yet, but it seems logical that if you install multiple instances of FBD in their own individual locations, you could theoretically run multiple games with multiple FBD sessions as well.

TIP:
To run FBD on a different machine than the server running the DS session, do the following:
(This method only works for the DS session btw, if using the original FB game then FBD must be installed on the same machine that FB is running on)

1: Create a normal windows share of the folder where il2server.exe is at.
2. From the admin PC, map a drive TO the dedicated server share created above.
3. In FBD.ini on the admin PC, make it point to the mapped drive/il2server.exe.

A windows share allows the shared folder to be visible across the network or internet. While I am not going to set down the exact steps, I do advise to use caution when creating this share and assigning permissions. If not done properly, you create a gap in the operating system security where someone could gain access to the machine and run amok. (Disclaimer: Neither myself, Sammie, BadBernie, TX Squadron or Microsoft http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif is held responsible for improper security on a network share that you create. Educate yourself prior to creating it and be sure that you are comfortable with what you are doing)

Edit: Sammie gave this a look over and feels it's a good start. As time permits hopefully this section can be deepened if need be by the FBD team.
(Thanks for the thumbsup Sammie -S-)

<font color=999966>Difficulty Settings</font>
No testing or documentation at this time. Any comments or solutions welcome however.

<font color=999966>Console Commands and how to use them</font>
TX Squadron and others are in the process of working on this, but there are far too many commands with ambiguous syntax to have a formal list here. To find a list of commands, type ? in the console window. For more detail, type ? and the name of the command you want to know more about:

? KICK
? mp_dotrange (etc etc)

A partial list of commands that do work:

chat message goes here ALL
(Sends a message to all teams in the game, you will see the response if you have the console window up)

user
(displays the number of all players in the game)

user 10 KICK
(Kicks player 10, whoever that may be. Change the number to match who needs to be kicked and there you have it)

mp_dotrange FOE DOT 3 COLOR 2 TYPE 2 NAME 2 ID 2 RANGE 3
mp_dotrange FRIENDLY DOT 20 COLOR 10 TYPE 10 NAME 10 ID 10 RANGE 15
(changes the icon distance depending on input, this is how you get limited icons in more realistic servers)

mission LOAD net\dogfight\2\01winterstalingrad45.mis BEGIN
(Loads mission if found in the path specified, used to manually rotate missions if FBD is not being used)

file kick.il2script
(used to manually execute whatever file is designated. Can be used for a kick list, map rotation or whatever is contained in the file.)

<font color=999966>Server.cmd usage</font>
As mentioned, the server.cmd is used to execute game parameters on startup. If done correctly, you can customize the available commands in the game to run when server.cmd is exectuted and in theory have an amazing amount of control over your session. Time being rather limited, I'm not going to go into great detail right now, but if you extrapolate on the commands I'm sure that you can come up with some pretty imaginative combinations.

<font color=999966>Other issues</font>
As you can see this post does not cover every possibility, it only touches on the basics of installation and slight modifications of the default settings. What I would like to see is for all of us to work together to make this as hands-on and complete as possible in the interest of getting as much as can be from the dedicated server. Hopefully this section will be expanded on as time goes by and new ideas are discovered.

We have all waited a long time for this to arrive and now that it's finally here, I'd hate to see it fall short of what we have been hoping for. Let's pull together and make it into something that helps the game become even more impressive than it already is.

Please post your discoveries and comments about the dedicated server and it's functionality and feel free to add, correct or point out anything that TX Squadron may not have gotten right.

On a personal note, TX Squadron and myself send our sincere appreciation to 1C/Maddox games and UBI for making this happen. I also send our thanks to the members of the community that have done so much to add to the game, without the combination of a solid game and community enthusiasm, Forgotten Battles would be just another game on the market.

Salute and looking forward to your responses,

Until the HL hosting issue is worked out, we'll be at UBI. With the apparent flexibility of the dedicated server, we will end up magically appearing to be in many places at the same time...both HL and UBI http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

An example of what TX used on the OC3 in IL2 before Sammie and BadBernie created the wonderful FBD script:

This file is now called settings.cmd and is executed upon loading of the dedicated server session.
Note that the first time the game is loaded, it will autorotate the mission within 5 minutes and then once per hour thereafter.

I highly recommend using FBD because of it's impressive functionality, but this type of script will work in a pinch, though at a reduced level of options by comparison.

Ok, got some more info for all you fine flight sim fans. I have been working on getting FB Daemon working with the dedicated server and i finally did it. With the help of Zen and Sammie and some deductive reasoning, its running smoothly on UBI right now. I only have one mission that i threw together rather quickly running right now. I will make some more missions this weekend. So here's the low down on what it takes to get it working.

Edits to configs.ini

ip=20000
ips=111.111.111.111 222.222.222.222 etc.

the ips= line needs to contain the ips of the computer that will be running FBD. Currently i have the dedicated server running on one connection and FBD running on my home pc. And its working like a dream.

Now here is the part I had the most trouble with. Any mission you wish to use must be in the defaut folders / 1, / 2, / 3, / 4. You cannot make your own folders. The dedicated server will load the missions from any folder you want, but FBD cannot load the missions unless they are in these folders. ALSO NOTE: each of those dirs have "3" spaces after the forward slash. It looks very deceiving when you look at the folders in Windows. This thru me for a loop for a bit as well.

Basicallly, that's it aside from making your missions. If you want to check out the server, Its |FAST| FBD Working Server on the UBI server (shame on UBI for that).

Also on a side note about this package they gave us. I look at it this way. I was looking for 3 things in the server mainly.

1. The obvious. Dedicated Server that uses low CPU resources. This we got. There were 8 people on the server and it was only using 2-8% of the cpu. Thats impressive.
2. The ability to run FBD servers. Well after some blood, sweat, tears, and MANY BEERS this is working.
3. The ability to run private servers and public servers with the dedicated package. Well we didn't quite get this one.

so i feel i got at least 80% of what i was looking for in the dedicated package. And the last time i checked, thats a passing grade in my book. All we can hope for is that UBI will release something that we can join by ip with, or that someone in the community will take care of it. For now i am satisfied. Not happy, but satisfied.

S! Happy Flying

You can open notepad and save it as a .txt file. Right click on it and select rename, then change the .txt to .cmd and click Yes if asked to confirm. As I recall, it didn't really matter what the extension was, it would run as a .il2script, a .cmd and probably anything else as well.

TX-Zen,

Do the missions need not be destroyed before loading a new one?

Also, do you know if the console app can be used to remote admin the thing? It does not appear too, but maybe I over-looked something.

From what i have gathered so far, you cannot remote admin the server thru the console that FBD opens. All remote admin needs to be dont thru chat in game for FDB.

In the newest version of FBD, you can set a time limit for each mission. So if the targets are not destroyed in the alotted time, it will load new mission.

if you have any questions, my MSN is sparx@fastclan.com

i will try and help all i can, but i am still learning this as well

S~ Baldie,

No they do not need to be destroyed prior to the new one loading, never had a single issue with that in the past.

For remote admin, the default console session only runs on the host server.

If you modify it so the console doesn't run (the way it's required for FBD) I would imagine there is the possibility of loading il2console.exe on your own machine and attempting to remote connect to the host machine.

At a guess I'd say it's probably not likely, but perhaps the chance is hidden in there somewhere. You do have the ability to add IP addresses of the machines that can admin the console on the host...that implies that remote admin is possible.

I'll do some testing this evening on that, I've already toyed around with it to some extent so far.

S! All!

This was my question on it - I posted this in Oleg's Ready Room and got zero replies...

S! Oleg!

I don't know whether or not you have been following the progress of Scorched Earth and the RAF74 IL2/FB Dynamic Campaign Engine, but I would very much like to integrate it with the dedicated server. I know the dedicated server can run scripts. Can it fire-off an external program? Can I pass a file-name to it? And most importantly, can it run coop missions? What I want to do is automate the following:

1) Start coop with Dedicated Server.
2) Server ends when last plane lands and automatically starts the RAF74 IL2/FB Dynamic Campaign System, parsing the coop and building a new mission. The RAF74 IL2/FB Dynamic Campaign System then starts the Dedicated Server up again - passing it the name of the new coop mission.
3) The Dedicated Server runs the next coop, ending when the last plane lands.
4) The server starts thd Dynamic Campaign System......

etc. etc. etc. It would continue until someone stops it manually.

I've written the coop mission generator. Is it possible to integrate it with the Dedicated Server? If not, would you be interested in making it compatable? I really think the ability to have a fully dynamic, perpetual online coop-based war would be just the thing to push this game of yours over the top.

Thank you in advance! If you would prefer to e-mail me privately, you can reach me at:

I think it could be made to work quite easily *IF* the dedicated server actually understands co-ops.

I'm not sure it does.

I just wanted to add that the plain vanilla dedicated server works under linux.

You need transgaming winex (I know, it's a pervert's name..) and X to run it, and it nicely grabs 100% of your CPU, but if you don't mind that, it works.

I didn't check the use of FBD or any other thing.

Note that this is not the same as a linux port of the server.. Wine games can be crashy and not perfectly working.

Unfortunately, the DS does NOT work with coops. I didn't know that when I made the original post though. It's a shame that coop support was not included.

Bump for TX

PS. Not complaining.... but your server runs alot better with less than 32 players altho I was in there the other day
and there was 32 & everyone had 100 Ping or less it ran great.

32 with HPB its preaty laggy...

<center><font size="7" color="red">Dedicated Server.exe Ya right!!![/i]</font>

XyZspineZyX
09-28-2003, 03:26 AM
I think it's the nature of FB to be somewhat laggy with 32 players regardless of connection speed etc. It's one of the few online games where great ping doesn't guarantee a lag free experience.

I suspect that the lag everyone complains about (not just on our server but others) is influenced by video settings on the local PC in addition to player load and connection speed on the server.

The reason I think this is a factor is that I myself get the same stutter and lag spurts on every server I play on, HL or UBI regardless of player load. I have a decent machine...soyo dragon ultra P4 2.4/512mb PC2700 and a Ti4600, not top of the line but still effective. I get no more than 10 fps more with this setup than my old P3 1ghz/256mb GeForce2 Ultra setup....20-30 fps or less vs my previous 15-20 fps. Same game, different machines, nearly identical performance. I am unable to run anything higher than medium settings in FB without suffering a serious fps hit. Skin DL is off on my machine and is usually off on the OC3 also.

In 3Dmark, I scored 2400 with my old system...with my current I scored over 11000. In any first person shooter game my fps double, tripled or quadrupled on maximum settings with the new card, which is a very logical expectation and proven by experience but not so in FB. Even when I host a session on this machine and have a zero ping, I get stutter to some degree and it happens then or on all the other servers I play...the OC3, Greatergreen, AFJ's server (which is a great room btw, my compliments) and others.

I have not figured out the cause and am certainly not knocking FB, but I use this to illustrate that for some reason with FB, player load and ping are not the only thing that has a noticeable effect. Many players fly our server and don't get much if any stutter, others find it unplayable. Those same players can hit GG or others and fly without lag. Some people can't fly GG and end up coming to TX for the same reason...to me that is weird to say the least. There are a few servers out there than I simply cannot play on regardless of player load as well.

We have a great connection and a powerhouse of a server too. I've noticed the normal hosting method is LESS laggy at 32 players than the dedicated, sometimes by a dramatic margin.
Hosting previous types of games also got logical results...which is one reason we have been so popular in the various games we've hosted, precisely because of how good our connection speed is...in FB I routinely see illogical results demonstrated by the stutter and lag people experience.

Our OC3 may in fact lag though and perhaps that is the cause of the stutter...but I find it very difficult to feel that is the root cause of the issue based on what I have seen so far from IL2 to FB 1.11 to the dedicated server compared to other games and the performance of my own machine too.

In anycase Locust, I am not saying this as a harsh rebuttal to your comments because I know where you're coming from and respect your opinion, but merely as a thoughtful observation of performance on our server and others...I think there is something inherent to the graphics processing of the game itself and it afflicts some more than others. Something to think about anyway.

Salute!

(And thanks for the feedback, I trust your judgement as always)

Ok, nice post on FBDameon.

I got it running straight away with your guide.

BUT, how the hell do i connect my pc to the dedicated server. Seems impossible?

My setup is
server with internal adsl
Shared bridged nics*2

Main pc connected to server.

Normally i use the IP of the internet connection to connect to my server using a standard il2fb running game with FBDameon running.
This works everytime, had 3 ppl on intranet and 5 on internet at one time(128k adsl) no probs at all.

I see the dedicated server on my ubi lobby list, can join, asks for password, add password and it trys to connect, but times out everytime.
THeres a feature in the lobby thingy to change intranet or internet ip but neither works. Also tried conecting directly via ip numbers but no success.

Is it possible or not? If so how do i get around this?

Seems there is a known issue since FB 1.1b where dual nics or those hosting behind a router are unable to connect to the UBI game lobby unfortunately.

I'll be glad to help troubleshoot the issue but I'm not optimistic http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

It's strange that I can host in my current format with dual or even 3 nics bridged acting like a router to an internal adsl with IL2FB v1 too v1.11 by connecting to the outgoing ip (internet ip).
I havent seen the forementioned bug i read about on previous posts.

I see the problem being the in-abiltiy to use IP addressing to reach the host. Apart from ubi lobby.

Maybe a dameon programme re-routing ip addressing may fix it or get around the lock out.

It still works though as long as the person hosting doesnt want to play.

Check out one of the earlier posts in this thread about using the old method to rotate maps:

@timeout 0360000 mission LOADNet/dogfight/1/1943-july-C.mis
@timeout 0380000 mission BEGIN

The @timeout command executes this function. I have an Excel spreadsheet that explains how the time is broken down if you're interested in it.

you were talkign about the lag that happens durring FB,
it dose so for two reasons that i can tell, (and have heard of from others)
1. player spawn
2. screen shots.

now you can do nothing about the screen shots, but you can do somethign about the player spawn.
if a player "respawns, " or Spawns for teh first time and the plane he/she chooss is not created onthe map lag is created, a way to cut down on thei is to include some of the flyable planes as objects on the map they willbeloaded durring the log on and will not be needed to reload again , reduces the lag.

i am not sure if you have to paly with the settings i cant remember that much , perhaps making them flyable or something.

well hope it helps.

I'm sorry, I may not have been clear. Here:

Let's say you execute f setup1.cmd but you now want whatever setup1.cmd did, reverted back. Just create a setup2.cmd with commands to do what you that.

Now on the other hand, if you are actually launching a binary executable from your setup.cmd, the only way I can think of killing that binary would be to install Windows Supplementary Disk (or whatever it's called) which gives you Unix-like ps and kill commands, and you could execute those from your setup2.cmd to kill actual processes running.
