This may have been posted before , but can anybody tell me what the three light bulbs on the right hand side of the Spitfire cockpit and the bell in the Hurricane cockpit are for? The bell confuses me more than the lights, 'cause while I don't know what the lights are for, I can see that they'd be useful, but the bell? You couldn't exactly use it to call for help over the roar of the merlin could you?

Yeah I've wondered about that 'bell' too.

Maybe it's for calling your batman over on landing. "Fetch me a cup of tea, Old Chap."

Bell, what bell? I should check this out... *runs off to find manual*...

It's on your left in the hurricane cockpit. It's like the kind that you get in hotel reception areas, you know, where you bang on the top of it to call somebody to the desk.

Got it! It`s not a bell. It`s the Landing Lamp Switch. That`s it. Just looks like a bell...

It`s not about the Machine...
(aka: You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!)

I tried looking for that. Strangely difficult...
Guess my reference on the Spit isn`t so good...
I`ll keep looking.

Derrrrrrrr.

Check the manual, what a great idea. I've had the answer sitting here in my Spitfire Pilots Notes (Crechy Publishing). They're spare bulbs for the reflector sight.

Actually there is an audible warning for the landing gear so maybe it is a bell.

Arthur Bishop (son of Billy Bishop) was a Spit pilot in WW2 and mentions it several times in his book of his flying experiences...

No, Jensen. It`s definitely NOT a bell. I`ve got the flight manual here with all the details.

Duh!
It's so you can call your butler. He gets the cream teas ready for when you land.
