View Full Version : Just got 256Mb 9800 Pro - what can I expect?

I've decided to build a beast PC based around this card, but for the moment it will be replacing my Nvidia Geforce 4 Ti4600.

Can I expect 'better' image quality and smoothness beyond belief, or will it, based upon my current system, just be room to grow?

(current system is P4 2.66Ghz, 1Gb RAM, Audigy Platinum EX).

Also, any of you ATI owners - can you suggest settings in both FB and the driver panel?

ta,
Matt.

I have read that between the 128mb and 256mb 9800 pro that there isnt much difference in frame rates, but I cant help but wonder if the image quality of the 256mb card is better than the 128mb card. anybody have any experience with these two cards?

My understanding is that ram just sits there except at extremely high resolutions. It also runs hotter than the 128meg ram - and so does not overclock quite as well.

Well first off you can expect it to run much faster than your GF4 and with the ability to actually turn on FSAA and AF without that much of a performance hit.

The difference with the 256 meg version and the 128 isn't all that much right now as games are not pushing texture memory limits yet. But you have bought a card that will last slightly longer that the 128 meg version. I'm a victim too when it comes to buy futures but... I think you're pretty safe. Just don't get angry when they (ATI) comes out with newer faster card in the next 6 months.

Getting back to what you have now. Be happy. I made the switch to ATI a few months back and I love my 9800 Pro. IL2 seems to like it now too.

The first releases of DX9 games seem to like the ATI very much. Halflife 2 is going to rock and it runs well on the ATI.

My 2 Cents

You should get steller FPS at perfect settings. FPS might even be higher than your monitors refresh rate /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif .

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

The first thing you will notice is that the textures are out of this world. You will notice textures on the main menu scrteen even that you never knew existed. Once you start flying you will be amazed. I dont know about the frame rates...but the textures will blow your mind.

A little off topic, but I'd like to know if a Radeon 9700 Pro is fast enough to run FB at 1600x1200? I'm getting a new 22" (Samsung SyncMaster 1200NF) monitor in about a week and would like try 1600x1200 in games. I'm planning to drop AA to 2x or maybe turning it off completely and changing landscape detail from perfect to excellent. AF I'd keep at 16x (performance setting).

I'm currently running the game at 1024x768 with 4x AA and 16x AF and maximum details, and it runs without a problem.

Here's my rig:

Athlon XP 2400+
Radeon 9700 Pro
1024MB DDR333
Epox 8RDA+
Windows Xp Pro SP1
DirectX 9.0b

Yes you should get superior image quality and performance for sure. Me I noticed a major performance increase over my old ti-4600 with my 9700 PRO.

The biggest improvement I have taken really. Much bigger than the upgrades from Geforce 2 GTS - Geforce 3 ti-500 to Geforce 4 ti-4600.

Yes it definiatly has the power for it. I got a similar system.

And the Radeons is designed originally around 128-mb of onboard memory. You can say that 256 is a bit of after construction for these video cards. Will mostly be left unused. Think 128 is the sweetspot these days but we will see with upcoming titles like DOOM 3 and HL 2. I don´t think the 9800 PRO handles 256 as efficient as if the Radeons where designed for it on the drawing board though. And it should definiatly bring more heat as someone mentioned.

To sum it up it´s a crime not running these videocards with a lot of aa and anisotropic at high resolutions and not running in 32-bit mode /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Nope , I have one of each in my computers. And the 128 has a great screen . The 256 is just a few frams faster if that ,, but what you will see is that you will refresh without pause where on the 128 you might see a very very short flash.. if that.. To me they are about the same , But as the games grow the 256 will still be around a lot longer...

No you did not go wrong.. I bought a Nvidia 5900 and took it back after I ran it.. my 9700 pro and 9800 Pro are a whole lot better too me..

And yes I used nvida all the time till the 9700 pro came out and I have not looked back. Well I tried one but did not like it..

thanks for all of the comments guys - it is much much better than the Ti4600, although it does show up weaknesses in the rest of the system. The result is 'project monkfish' - building a _FAST_ PC with the following spec:

256Mb 9800 Pro
Antect 550W PSU,
Abit IC7 Max3 motherboard,
Pentium 4 Extreme Edition @ 3.2Ghz,
Western Digital Raptor 10,000 RPM drive x 2 in RAID 0,
1Gb Kingston HyperX PC4000 RAM,
Vapochill Extreme Edition refrigerated CPU cooler,
Water cooling kit for graphics card and northbridge.

Should hit 4.1Ghz when overclocked with that little lot /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif - bring on Lomac and Half Life 2 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

/m

p.s. I am also sad that I had to shut down the image gallery.
