I like the openess of the buffalo, hurri, and p 40, some cockpit views are kind of obstructive. Also , how do you get a rear view of bombs that you have just dropped?

I think the Me-262 is the best to date. With the FW-190 cockpit being a close second.

Agree.. the fw190 looks very nice, still modern and high tech in a way.

The 109E is also a favourite of mine. With all the fuzz about the G2 now, I think the G2 has the least appealing 109 cockpit.

The russians on the other hand, look like wild and rude kosack-cockpits. It would make perfect sense if there was some compartment for an old sabre somewhere....

P-40...

Great forward and side visibility...almost like playing with "cockpit on" off.

That and 6-.50's wingmounted and therefore no muzzle flash...can't be beat for tracking and visibility imho.

The Me-262 gets my vote for the cleanest and most functional cockpit. Great visability, all the important stuff at the top of the panel, and it is the master of all other fighters. Fw 190's come in second. They have an equally wonderful cockpit layout but Oleg in his infanite wisdom screwed up the gunsight and made that bottom crossbar about 3x as big as it really was. But other than that it is great. The Yak 3 has possibly the best all round visability but its cockpit is so sparse that I consider it to be amoung the worst.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.</center>

You cant see much out of the front of the 190. Especially the low front ... the Panel comes way too far up for my tastes. Id rather go with the P40

"-When in doubt, empty your magazine.
-Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you are.
-Never forget that your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.
-If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
-No plan survives the first contact intact.
-All 5 second grenade fuses burn down in 3 seconds." Excerpt from Murphy's Laws

I have to say that the 262 might now have upt it.

That would have to be the TB3. Acres of room to strech out in and with the wind in your hair. It has that open topped crusier feel about it. Just like a big Yank Cadillac. Has got to be popular in California, does it come in pink? A must for the leisurly ride in skies above Berlin.

Depends on what you mean by "best".

For visibility, I'd say the P39 and 262 are up near the top.

If I actualy had to go to war, I'd probably say the IL-2. I don't think I can think of a time I got a "pilot killed" when I was flying an IL-2. The whole thing is a flying tank, and the protection from the cockpit is excellent. Visibility isn't too bad either. Not great, but certainly not the worst.

i have never fouond the forward vis in teh 190 a problem as i fight in the vertical

if I am under the bandit the vis is fine and if I am above the bandit I use the superb roll rate to invert and the visibilty is still fine

rearward vis is also supberb

the only time vis is an issuein the 190 is T&B locking on to a bandits six and trying for a deflection shot but i never do that in the 190 anyway

The MkII Hurris have great visibility, too.

As far as looks, I don't know, of the planes I've flown in pit regularly, haven't flown them all yet, I like the P39s because they look damn cool.

For ergonomics and style, I'd have to go with the LA7. I feel like I'm driving a Cadillac when I'm in that pit. I just rotate the two canopy release levers 90? and use'em for cupholders./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

CANOPY RELEASE LEVERS!?! WHY DOSEN'T THE LA-7 3x B-20 HAVE THOSE!?!

LOL, actually, those are the cannon cocking levers, if the guns jammed you could pull on those hopeing to fix the issue.

Currently I like the Me-262 and FW-190 (even though it has errors in it, and I'm biased as well).

From what I have seen I think the Bf-110 and the P-38 cockpits will be pretty cool, especially when we get to see them working/moving and all. The Tempest (my other favorite), should be awesome too but that is more to the credit of Hammerd and Alex than the actual layout of the cockpit.

hi,
question: in real or in game ? (with this old overtook camera view system in the game engine ?)

XyZspineZyX

Me.262 and P-39 have the best visibility, but P-39 instruments panel is crap, since most of the instruments are not easily visible being between your legs.
FWs have the more rational and best looking instruments panel, but front visibility is the worst of all FB planes (except the Tchaika!).
He.111 and Bf.109Gs and K are ok, while E and F are a bit "primitive".
Late Sturmoviks and Stukas are ok.
Hurris are ok, but I hate non-metric instruments.
Yaks and La-7 have a great visibility, but their instrument panels suck! No artificial horizon, RPM counter invisible, temperature not easily visible, and so on. Too bad, because they're good planes!
Flying TB-3 looks like driving a boat! I love it!
I don't fly often Brewster, P-40, P-47, MiGs and LaGGs (and all the others i did not mention), so I can't say...

Best: Me.262 "Schwalbe"
Worst: I-153 "Tchaika"

262 brewster and hurri are all cockpits i like (aethestically)

as for seeing bombs you have dropped the only way if in full real is to quickly bank and turn to an angle where you can see the area you just dropped the bomb(probably from the rearmost view you can get from your canopy) - (works best if you have some delay on the bomb also)

Once the Mustang D gets here I think it'll be tops. All the flight instruments up high in a nice group & the view from the bubble canopy will be great. And i'm not biased.

yak 3 has view now tho instruments aren't so good.

What's interesting is home comfortable i become with certain cockpits after flying them a while. More than any other sim i've played I really feel like im climbing into the particular plane im flying. Its a great feeling, & really adds to the immersion.

Oh & no-one likes the I-16 ? Open air, wind in your hair & a nice solid wall behind to protect your but from flying metal! Plus cranking up the gear is blast.
For now i vote I-16!

Despite the lack of refraction, I like the FW190 instrument layout and the outstanding search view.

The Me262 is excellent all around.

The P-39 has a great forward view but the search view is horrible.

I don't like the forward view on the Yaks or the P47D-10 and 22.

P-39.

I'm biased though /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Also like the Fw-190 - it looks so clean and modern (well, for 1940's) inside. But aside from the 39 I'm gonna have to go along with the crowd and say that the Me-262 has the best combination of visibility and functionality.

The fighter pilot's emotions are those of a duellist - cool, precise, impersonal. He is priviledged to kill well. For if one must kill or be killed, as now one must, it should, I feel, be done with dignity. Death should be given the setting it deserves; it should never be a pettiness; and for the fighter pilot it never can be.
