The Mystery of The Box and The Voynich Manuscript

An ancient artifact created by the First Civilization, capable of interpreting and translating First Civilization language, most notably written in the Voynich manuscript.

The Voynich Manuscript

An illustrated codex hand-written in First Civilization writing, and a Piece of Eden.

Commonly believed to have been written around 1405, the artifact was previously in the possession of Emperor Rudolf II of the Holy Roman Empire, though four of the manuscript's pages wound up in the hands of Governor Peter Beckford of Jamaica by the early 18th century. After they were taken from the Beckford estate, the pages were scattered across the Caribbean, until they were eventually collected by the pirate-turned-Assassin Edward Kenway between 1715 and 1722.

In the following decades, the Assassins and Templars alike learned of the connection between the manuscript and the mysterious Precursor box, one of the only devices that could translate its incomprehensible text. In 1755, the inventor Benjamin Franklin was the first known human to properly use both pieces in tandem, electrifying the box with lightning. It was during this experiment that the Assassin Shay Cormac discovered the location of a hidden First Civilization vault hidden underneath the Carmo Convent in Lisbon, Portugal.

In 1839, the Mentor of the Indian Assassins, Hamid, tasked Arbaaz Mir with the recovery of a map from the Voynich manuscript detailing information on the Koh-i-Noor diamond, during their quest to protect the artifact from falling into the British Templars' hands.

In 2013, Abstergo Industries warned memory research analysts at Abstergo Entertainment, who were assigned to relive the memories of European subjects during the 15th and 16th centuries, to look out for the Voynich manuscript during their Animus sessions, especially for its supposed connection to the English philosopher Roger Bacon.

Notes about The Manuscript:

The manuscript is named after book dealer Wilfrid Voynich, who purchased it in 1912.
It is theorized that the Voynich manuscript may have been sold to Rudolf II by John Dee. Another theory suggests that the manuscript was written by Edward Kelley, who could speak with members of the First Civilization through his Crystal Ball.

The map Arbaaz acquired features the Voynich manuscript pages Folio 70r and 75r, as well as drawings of the Koh-i-Noor, two Apples of Eden, a Memory Seal and symbols found on Marcus Junius Brutus' drawing of the Colosseum Vault and on throwing knives wielded by Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and Ezio Auditore.

The Precursor Box Throughout History

By November 1524, the Precursor box was in the possession of the Italian Assassin Mentor Ezio Auditore da Firenze, in his villa in Tuscany. The Chinese Assassin, Shao Jun, who had travelled there seeking Ezio's advice on resolving the problems in her homeland, was given the box and told that it would aid her. Ezio stated that she should only open it if she were to lose her way.

The box remained in the possession of the Chinese Assassins for about a hundred years after Jun's death. It was believed that they sent it to Acapulco with the Manila galleons.

By 1735, the Precursor box ended up in the possession of the French Templars, who were transporting it on aboard a galleon to Port-au-Prince, to be given to Bastienne Josèphe. However, the fleet transporting the artifact was attacked by the Assassin Adéwalé, who retrieved the parcel that contained the box from the Templar admiral. In July 1737, he eventually handed it to Bastienne.

Searching for the Temples

By November 1751, both the Precursor box and the Voynich manuscript were in the possession of François Mackandal, Mentor of the Assassin Brotherhood in Saint-Domingue. Using the artifacts, Mackandal discovered the existence of a First Civilization Temple near Port-au-Prince and sent his subordinate, Vendredi, to investigate it. Unbeknownst to Mackandal, the Temple was part of a system that held the Earth together.

Vendredi activated the Temple's machinery, causing a massive earthquake which destroyed Port-au-Prince and the surrounding region. After the disaster, Master Templar Lawrence Washington stole the Precursor box and manuscript from Mackandal's camp and took the artifacts with him to Virginia, where the Templars studied the artifacts in an attempt to learn how to use them.

Shay Cormac, a member of the Colonial branch of the Assassin Order, assassinated Washington in search of the box in 1752. However, the box was already in possession of the Templar Samuel Smith, while the manuscript had been entrusted to James Wardrop, another noted Templar. In 1754, Shay had managed to track Smith down and assassinate him, with the help of a fellow Assassin, Chevalier de la Vérendrye. Shay recovered the Precursor box from Smith and delivered it to Benjamin Franklin, who was confident conducting electricity through the box would activate it.

With Shay and Hope Jensen's assistance, Franklin succeeded in powering the box, which projected a view of the Earth and displayed locations of several First Civilization sites, one of them being Lisbon, Portugal. The box was subsequently given to Achilles Davenport, the Mentor of Colonial Assassins, who kept it secure at the Davenport Homestead, the Assassins' primary base of operations in the British colonies.

In 1759, Hope managed to replicate Franklin's experiment and discovered another First Civilization Temple hidden in the Arctic. After the ordeal, Chevalier de la Vérendrye was tasked with hiding the box, and decided to ship it away from the colonies.

By December 1776, the box was in the possession of the French Assassins. Having switched sides to the Templars twenty years before, Shay learned of this and traveled to Paris. Rescuing Franklin from a group of criminals, Shay enlisted his aid in entering the Palace of Versailles, claiming to have a business meeting there. After a meeting in the palace, the Assassins entrusted the box to Charles Dorian. Having made his way inside, Shay assassinated Charles and took the box from him, reclaiming it for the Templars.

Modern Day

In February 2014, the Assassins Harlan Cunningham and Arend Schut stole the artifact from an Abstergo Industries facility in Rotterdam. Abstergo's Sigma Team led by Juhani Otso Berg engaged the Assassins in combat, forcing them to leave the artifact behind.

So do you think we'll ever encounter that box in future installments? The Voynich is one of the real life mysteries that remain undeciphered to this day, and since the Animus translates every language and First Civ. members most likely speak our languages, there was no way to tell what their native language was. When Minerva spoke to Ezio, she either spoke English (hence the accent, since it's not her native tongue) or she spoke Italian and the Animus translated it to English, like it did with other dialogues that could not have been in English, such as Ezio and Leonardo's conversations.

We know very little about the First Civilization and I believe this box could be one of the many ways we can learn more about their world and nature, even the different forms of life that existed in that time, as The Voynich Manuscript shows sketches of unknown plants that could've grown in that time.

Really interesting read. Makes me want to replay Rogue. Tbh it seems kind've odd that they introduced the box in Embers and it only payed off in Rogue when it was prior alluded to in Freedom Cry. Seems like they threw the box in there for the hell of it and waited to see how they could use it as a plot device. Considering the fact Shay now possesses the box, and he was nowhere to be seen when Connor was cleaning up the colonies, I REALLY want to see what they do with him and/or where they take his story.

Oh wait, they'll probably do literally nothing. :(

Well as per BRAHMAN and ROGUE, the Kohinoor in England is a Fake. The real diamond/POE is lost to history.

Instead of seeing what they want you to see, you gotta open your brain to the possibilities.

I will marry anyone who gets the reference I made.

Nice thought provoking thread again Rino. I once watched a documentary about the manuscript. It really is a pretty fascinating oddity.

I do not think we have seen the last of the precursor box though. It has featured in the series so much already. It's likely to be in Chronicles China for sure.

I'm convinced Shao Jun ( or someone else) causes the Earthquake of 1556 in China

Jun would be fairly old being 51, so she potentially died as well.

I Hope we have more details in chronicles : china,is really fun to guess what is the objective of first civ when they created something that can destroy the earth, but I fear that the writers don't think in this details.

Darby basically assume that Ezio giving the box to Shao jun is a plot hole here : https://twitter.com/DarbyMcDevitt/status/576479536935751680

The error is from Rogue writers, they want to include portugal's earthquake in the plot and made the box leading to it, the hope is that they correct this in China.

maybe the box have more than one function, and ezio don't know about that bad temples...

You could make a fine database writer for AC games in Ubisoft.
