I just finished looking at "The Battle of Britain" for like the 10th time and every time I watch it, I wonder about something. What's up with the ME's. They look totally different in the nose. I know they were supplied by Spain, did they change the engine or something??

G├┬Âring: "Gibt es noch etwas das ich f├╝r Sie tun kan?"
Falke: " Jawul Herr Feldmarschalk, geben Sie mir ein Staffel Spitfires!"

I think you are talking about the Hispano 109s that has the Merlin engine.

Look here:

They do look funky...

more info here

in the walkarounds section, take a look at the Avia S-199.178

I actually quite like the look of the thing - sort of an 'evolved' 109 if you like http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Andrew, I think it was more of a primitive thing. The 109G2 is evolved. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif The Hispanos were Neanderthals. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif Uggg!

Ok, maybe evolved is the wrong word http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/1072.gif but the Avia certainly looks better than the hispano jobbies. - best of a bad lot LOL!

http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkaround/199.178/199-06.jpg

even has a blister hood like the spit http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

they certainly make a better job of the engine than the square looking Hispanos....

http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkaround/199.178/199-01.jpg

Dont get me wrong, I think most of the re-engined jobs are abberations http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif but compared with the "Buchon" I'd pick an Avia anyday http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Of course I'd rather have a "real" F G or K series 109,with its respective DB engine but sadly flying examples (or any for that matter) are getting fewer and fewer.

I've seen that Avia in person, it looks pretty mean.

It's a funny thing. I remember that when I saw the movie for the first as an eleven year old back in '69, that was the first thing I noticed. Later, I found out that they were Merlin engined. How ironic! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!

I only like the 109 series starting with the Emils. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't refuse any Avias, Hispanos, or Buchons if Oleg were to supply them but I'm sure I'll never be confronted with that decision. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'm with you mate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/351.gif wasn't for a minute suggesting that I wanted an Avia, Hispano or Buchon in game, don't get me wrong - just saying that in terms of looks, I think that the Avia is the best of a bad bunch http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

What I would REALLY like to see in game is a 109 K14 with the DB605L engine http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif that would be something http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I agree Andrew, the Avia is the best of a bad lot. I wonder why they never continued to use the bubble canopy in later models. It seems to me that visibility could have been better.

One thing that I could never stand viewing was a pic of an early 109 with a two-bladed prop. Looks too "Cessna-ized"(new English word http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif). Just thinking of it means I'll lose sleep tonight. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif

AGGGGHHH stop! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif you are giving me nightmares http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif "cessna-ized" 109...<shudders>

could be worse I suppose - didnt they build a 109 with the BMW 801 radial engine to see how it would compare with the FW-190 in trials? Would like to have seen that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Well here is something evolved 109:

http://ww2photo.mimerswell.com/air/fin/pyrre/pyrrem.htm

http://www.saunalahti.fi/veijju/ma00.html

Its Finnish "Py├┬Ârremyrsky" (Whirlwind or Hurricane), got the best out of 109 and modified it to better: more agility, wider undercarriage etc. Unfortunately it came too late for war.

Aimosika, have you been stealing pics from Harryklein's thread? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

109 Hurricane, yep, I think Harry designed that one. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

alot of them were twin seating bf108 which was what the 109 was modeled on,cheers.

After it was refeuled i climbed in.With many manipulations the mechcanics started the turbines.I followed their actions with the greatest of interest. The first one started quite easily.the second caught fire.In no time the whole engine was on fire.Luckily as a fighter pilot i was used to getting quickly out of the cockpit. The fire was quickly put out.The second plane caused no trouble - Adolf Galland (first time in a ME262)
