This is just a helpful hint to those out there running servers.

When you're setup for as much as 30! people in a dogfight server you might want to take into consideration all those people typing every 10 seconds "man this is laggy!".

Your computer is not your *****, you don't need to prove it's grandness by parading it around with too many players. Cause all you're doing is turning a possibly good playing experience into a warping headache. Most servers out their that are hosting 20 or more would be wise to cut it down to the high teens or even less. After all what's more important your computer specs or how it actually performs?

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Not only is the # of players important to lagg, is the design of the mission itself. Just because your system can handle 3000 static objects on a huge map, doesn't mean that your client's computer can. Static objects put strain on systems, and systems w/ 512mb or less really feel the difference when you've got 50 AC on the airbase, runway fires, and barrage balloons. Now it is good to have AC pre-loaded to avoid spawn stutter, but you only need one AC for each flyable AC in your server.

FighterJerks is a good system with massive bandwidth, but I'm still going to limit players to 16. I'm just looking out for the low-end machines.

Planesets will be limited too. 2-3 types per team.

I prefer fast, to complex.

It might be you and not the server. I have a terrible time on Greatergreen with stutter, but, many others have no issue at all.

On the serious note.. here are few ideas.

On the relaxed settings DF servers majority flies:

BF109K4
BF109G6/AS
BF109G2
FW190 A9
FW190D9

B-17
PE-8
IL2-3T
LA-7 3USB
Yak-3
Ki-84
A6M
P-51
P-40 1942

That`s 14 planes... there is no really need for all 100 something planes, why bother. Now take your time and place on the map, far away from action a static plane for each flyable that described above, so you`ll have 14 static planes hidden somewhere.

Maps.

There are quiet a few maps in the selection that are very hard on average system, not only size wise, texture wise too. Distance between airbases and amount of airbases is very important too. If you have them 10km apart you going to have major 20 planes furball surrounded by AAA fire and there... you have yourself a nice BlackDeath track2 that could handle top of the line and near that systems. On OnLine (insert season here) maps are very user friendly and less FPS consumptive then anything else. I think only 3 of Islands maps are pretty good for everyboddy. Crimea and Kuban are exellent and have some pretty landscape too. So plenty to choose from... why take Islands8 where palm trees put most of the systems on their knees?

Bottom line, don`t kidd yourselfs, Playing and hosting on the same system for 20 ppl is a nonesense, 16 Tops, no matter how good your system is... VFC*HOST is XP3200 with 768 of PC3200 DDR 400 and even on this machine with 10MB/1MB connection i host only for 20+host and that`s Dedicated server, not regular hosting http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. I could go 30 if i wanted to... but game should be enjoyable for everyone IMO.

I almost never host with more than 15 slots and usually limit it to 12.

Sorry to get sidetracked, I need to upgrade soon because I need another computer at work. I have a P4 2.53 now.

I lied mate http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif It`s XP2500 OC`ed to XP3200 level hehe.. 200x11, runs like a dream. I don`t think that going from P4 2.53 to XP3200 is a major upgrade tho... but that`s up to you mate. 64 bit is right around the corner http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I say, paint yer regiment on you skin and don't look back.

Use default pilot skins and don't look back.

Put tail-wheel lock on a slider and don't look back.

Don't look back!!!

Man, what a day for Server discussions. I currently have 3 dedicated servers runnign on one Server. I have seen as many as 60 players total on all three servers and there was no more lag/stutters present then if there were only 10 players total. Most of this is due to the line speed. Another thing that people don't realize is, you cannot go into a 20+ players server with your netspeed set at a 56k level. Its just not going to happen. If the server has its netspeed set at this level as well, then its not goign to get any better. If the server host sets his netspeed to a level that is adequate for the number of players for his server and you set your netspeed to match this, you will see a whole new game.

I do agree with you though. There are a lot of server admins out there that are trying to get more out of their servers then is possible. Line speed is very important. Just to give you some data to run with. At this moment right now, there are 20 players total on two of the servers. The server is using 800kbps up and 300kbps down. If i recall correctly, with 40 players, it was using ~ 2mbps up and 1mbps down.

Hope this helps someone http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

S~ and happy flying

I'm probably guilty of running maps that are not as friendly as could be. I can also say that if I did not consider the varied client machines, I would create even more demanding maps!

I'd love to create maps with AI ground units enroute to your base that if not stopped, will wreak havok on any plane taking off or landing. Or AI bombers enroute to do some serious bombing. As it is now, the most I do is usually place a couple of dozen static aircraft as targets for opposing bombers or fighters and sometimes I add AAA, but I usually limit AAA to flak only, in effort to reduce client CPU/Video lag.

It's really a balancing act from the hosting perspective. You want to add more to add immersion, but you also want as many folks as possible to be able to enjoy the experience. Add on top of this the fact that a 56k modem is going to have issues on a 20 person server no matter what you try to do.

One good thing though is IL-2 is going to be around for a LONG time and hopefully as time goes by and folks upgrade their hardware, server admins will be able to create some really fantastic environments that everybody can enjoy.

They are not hidden planes mate, they just regular static planes. When you build your maps and make an aircraft selection at home base, make sure that for each aircraft that you allow to be flyable, there will be a static one, meaning: say you added I-16 and I-153 to home base plane selection. Go to static aicraft in objects viewer and place static I-16 and I-153 on some unmarked airbase far far away from action. That way planes will be preloaded on initial server startup with that particular map. It significantly reduces, to almost none spawn stutter.

As far as server speed goes, if i understood your question correctly, server speed is set to 10000 on my dedicated and it seems to be working flowlessly. You might wanna look in this thread for additional info on server speed: http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=317108502
