Why is it that on german planes you can cut to idle and set prop at 100 to slow down drastically but in russian planes this doesnt work? something to do with constant speed props? i know this trick works only on planes that you have to adjust prop pitch in flight. the planes you leave on 100 prop it doesnt work on obviously, i understand that but WHY are the planes modelled differently when it comes to this ?

Right about now your thinking to yourself IS he an Ace or isnt he an Ace? well you just gotta ask yourself one question...do ya feel lucky? ...well do ya... ??? www.fighterjocks.net (http://www.fighterjocks.net) home of the Real Sim Aces
http://www.bloggerheads.com/mash_quiz/images/mash_hawkeye.jpg (http://www.bloggerheads.com/mash_quiz/)

no that tactic only works on planes that dont normally fly at 100 prop pitch. as they would overrev. so you cut to idle and then put at 100 prop pitch and the plane stops on a DIME

That's the way it should be. 100% pitch isn't biting as much air. It's like 1st gear ina car. The Russian planes with constant speed prop don't work the same way.

Land a D9 on auto pitch, and then manual 100% pitch. World of difference.

I don't think it's a bug. LW and allied planes had different systems.

I've read up on the two systems, but my understanding is pretty limited. The allied planes had constant speed props. What you're adjusting is the speed the prop spins at and a governor maintains that speed.

In LW planes you're adjusting the pitch directly and the speed of rotation can vary. That's why diving in an LW plane without adjusting the prop pitch will over-rev and burn out the engine.

Anyway, someone with a better understanding will probably explain it much better.

Sounds like a good trick to get the super yaks off my butt!

109's are direct blade angle adjustable, when you change the angle it's via direct mechanical linkage to the prop. VVS and others are a different set up, no direct linkage. Your telling the prop controller what RPM's you want the prop to run at by moving the prop lever, the prop controller than decides based on conditions like throttle setting, air speed, altitude, and such automatically where to set the blade angle.

Currently the range and modes in the VVS auto props are still simplified and limited. Expect more blown engines in high speed wide open dive in the future though.

thanks these answers all cleared up my questions. and to the guy who thought it would work against yaks on his tail . it works every time on the b and z guys it even gives you a shot on them if you hit full throttle.just remember to immediately go to auto prop as you dont have time to tap the prop down to 65 as you chase him up.or your engine dies.... i dont know if id try it on yaks as itll leave you dead in the water against a nimble opponent.
