I've been playing IL2 for about a year now, but what is a GOOD setup for my joystick to use online?? (which buttons do i need to assign?)

I'm using a MS SIDEWINDER 3D Precision Pro - Non Forcefeedback....

My current setup:
Trigger: Fire ALL guns/cannons
Top buttons: 1x Fire MG's, 1x Fire Cannons, 1x Fire Bombs/Rockets

Base Buttons:
1x Flaps up, 1x Flaps down
1x Boost/WEP
1x Zoom in (Il2 Delete-button - Gunsight view)
1x Zoom out (End-button - Normal view)

anyone got some suggestions for this?

I have an MSFFB2 and used to have your kind of stick. You can make the combination of 8 buttons to perform at least 20 functions by using the sidewinder game controller software.

Create a profile in the game software. Assign 3 base buttons as mode keys (Alt, Shift, Ctrl).
Assign the key stroke you often use to the rest of the buttons.
Once you have done that, go to the in-game controls and change or add the keystrokes by overwriting some of the default keystroke command. Do it like you would normally do when you change a keystroke command. If you have successfully profiled your joystick, the buttons will now act like as a keyboard. So it's just like pressing a mode key combined with one of the other buttons to create a keystroke combination. For example, you assign your trigger as the 'Enter' key, so you now have the combinations ctrl enter, shift enter, and alt enter. Now you have a Trigger with 3 functions already (e.g. ctrl enter for 1 & 2 guns, shift enter for bombs, alt enter for rockets). Don't waste the mode keys as you can also assign functions on its own and by combining them (e.g. Ctrl + Shift).
I have at least 20+ functions on my MSFFB2.
The ones I remember are:
Primary + Secondary guns
Primary guns
Secondary guns
Bombs
Rockets
Up Flaps
Down flaps
elevator trim up
elevator trim down
prop pitch up
prop pitch down
cockpit view
Toggle View on one button (instead of a zoom and normal view on 2 separate buttons)
Next target
previous target
Lock enemy air
lock enemy ground
outside padlock view (air)
outside padlock view (ground)
outside padlock view (friendly air) for formation flying when externals are on.

The most comfortable setup is a matter of one's own preference. I say do your own profile and key stroke combination so that you are most familiar with it. Hope this gives you an idea on how to assign the keystrokes.

I think it's quite odd to ask someone else for the best setup!
You know your own style an preferences, we don't!

W/ a limited amount of buttons, I'd advise you to have more view control and less concentration on weapons. Rockets and Bombs fit very nicely on the keyboard, as you don't use them as often, and rarely use them in a hurry.

Plus you could save a button by just leaving your trigger firring both cannons and MG and having a separate button for MG, but not cannon. you may need to fire MG w/o the cannon, but rarely do you fire the cannon and not the MG.

W the buttons you save, Id assign to view commands Nothing is more important than situational awareness and you need to be able to look around quickly to achieve this.

Sidewinder users should look beyond the limitations of the 8 button configuration. If you install the stick and let Windows assign a generic driver, then yes, you are limited to eight buttons.
But read my post above, it is possible to expand those eight buttons and perform at least 20 functions.
I have 2 profiles for external enabled where some functions are allocated to situational awareness and also one for external disabled full real servers to concentrate less on the limited stuational awareness and more on CEM.
