while i know this plane is a flying coffin i would love to fly it. best defensivly armed german bomber i believe.

I hope they dont model the serious troubles it had ..... while id like to fly it just getting airborne and ur engines bursting into flames could be a problem...

anyone else wanna see the flying coffin in the air?

Well,an He-177 is in the works but I'm not sure if it'll be flyable.

As far as i know in later Versions the fire problem was pretty much handled.

And besides this Problem, the HE 117 was an excellent Bomber, able to fly high, fast, with a very nice bombload and excellent defensive capabilities.

Thats what i read some time ago at least.

When it worked, it seemed to work very well. Maintainance seemed to be one of several keys to keeping it operational, though above and beyond a reasonable level. Smithsonian has last piece (as it was advertised in past, anyway) in the form of a mostly complete engine QEC package. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Would love to command one http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif .

Ahh, the Griffin. This is one of my favorite bombers. It has a very menacing look to it, especially on the ground. The landing gear (To me) looks like the talons of the great Griffin, and I think that's where it gets it's nickname.

It was designed with a fairly forward thinking concept. Four engine bombers were the best idea for range, alt and speed. The Griffin has four engines, but to reduce drag, the engines were placed in pairs of two one behind the other. A great concept! In theory, not in practice.

The engines would fail because of the linkage systems connecting the two engines together. This was created, mainly, because of too much torque on the system. Most of the time, failure was accompanied by uncontrollable fire. They were also a maintainence nightmare.

The airframe was fairly robust, and I often wondered why German designers didnt just make the thing a 4 engined bomber.

But the main problem that plagued the aircraft was not in it's design, as most of the bugs could have been worked out of the plane. No, the main problem was Germany's total lack of committment to a long range (Strategic) bomber force.

Would the 177 made a difference if produced in massive numbers with mechanical bugs worked out of the plane? Who knows...

I find it ironic that the plane was named after a mythical Lion-bird creature. The mythical Griffin never flew, and in reality, Germany's Griffin didnt either (At least not to the extent that it made a difference).

Still though, I would love so much to fly one in FB... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The famous burning engines of the Griffon shouldn't be noticeable in FB, because they occured randomly. Don't expect them to go up in flames after short bursts.

IMO, at least in FB, the He177 shouldn't be a death trap.

Well if I'm not entirelly wrong, didn't the Germans make a 4 separate engine version of the 177 called the 277?

People, ignore this troll. I just made a search for He-177 here and look what I found: another He-177 thread started by the same Thrawn888, with an nearly identical flame post:

I hope those are NOT fully modelled into the game while it would be realistic it would give most pilots like a 1/10 chance of getting into the air without the engines on fire already i can see it now:

(taking off)

engine 1 overheating, engine 2 overheating.

(just in air)

engine 1 on fire, engine 2 on fire.

thatd would just suck, but i think the plane is worth it.

Compare the above with the last one:

You can read the previous topic about He-177 from here:

Personally I read a lot of garbage on similar ww2 related forums, but this thread seems to top everything. No wonder mods close it with the following message:

You lot amaze me

Some of you are completely incapable of making a point without having a pop or insulting someone.

This thread went off topic on page one.

This has happened many times on this forum, always by the same people. I'm not naming names they know who they are.

I am also not going to waste any time sending PM's to anyone.

This kind of behaviour stops. NOW

Seems that mods intervention is needed.

Uh,what did he write that was so inflammatory? Are you saying he's a troll simply because he posted a similar thread sometime last year?
