Now we have Virtual crew, will we get to see them talk, joke, laugh, eat, losing the plot under depthcharge attack http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/cry.gif and even maybe use the toilet. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

lol i got some information on the u-boat toilet. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/353.gif

The operation of a toilet while submerged is mainly just a matter of pumping out while not letting anything back in...

The toilet could not be operated below a depth of around 80 feet due to the increased pressure. Crewmen had to use buckets in various compartments in the period between deep diving and shallower depths.

The toilet, or head in navy terminology, sometimes was called tube #7 to reflect its use as an "offensive weapon".

Basically, the toilet has two chambers, one you can see and use, and a second that is valved at both inlets. The actual procedure is a bit more involved:

Upon completion of your main task, you open the valve to the second chamber.... BUT FIRST, check the SECOND valve to that chamber: if it is even a little bit open, you're in for a very bad surprise.

Pump the contents of the bowl into the second chamber with the hand-pump.

CLOSE that valve from 2nd chamber to bowl.

Check that valve AGAIN. Now open the valve from the 2nd chamber to the sea.

Pump the contents of the second chamber to the sea.

(almost done) CLOSE BOTH VALVES. Though a great practical joke to leave one open, http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif it is one that has a costly payback. Oh, and don't forget to sign out as you leave!

Indeed the life of the submariner was not a pleasant one. I think that all Sub Commanders from ALL sides when asked to reminisce about their time in Subs always remarked on the smell and how this stench putrified the air, from the ' head' and normal body odour.

Drinking water became like gold-dust and washing was scarcely done.

Doubt If I could ever get used to that !

Anyone got any more interesting snippets on life in Subs please post them, so we can all have a better idea of what it was like.

Regards

With the problem of body oder when they went to port for reload/refit they often used bottles of perfume. MANY! bottles to help mask the oder a bit. (saw it on a documentary somewhere)
